Gary Hart wins 1984 Democratic nomination

Not sure if this was discussed before but Senator Gary Hart had big support in the 1984 Democratic nomination race. Then Mondale put out that famous late-night red phone commercial which was a big factor in his eventual victory over Hart.

What if Gary Hart managed to still beat Mondale and win the nomination? Reagan would probably still defeat him in the election but not the 525-13 electoral margin that still baffles some of us...

Wasn't he the one who got photographed with a much-younger woman on a yacht called "Monkey Business" or something?

If that was him, get rid of that episode and things will be better for him.

Hart would preform better than Mondale did, especially in the west, but aside from that, I don't see any huge differences. Maybe he picks off Nevada, his home state of Colorado, New Mexico, and then carries Minnesota and maybe turns out the youth vote to give him New York or Massachusetts.

California is a long shot, but in a best case scenario, he might carry it.

Gary Hot-Pants winning the Dems' nomination?

Well, if you eliminate the incident that brought about his downfall (including not insulting New Jersey the day before the primary), that would be a start. Might also butterfly "Where's the beef?"
