Garibaldi died in America 1861/1862

Giuseppe Garibaldi offered to serve in the Union Army OTL but ultimately this did not occur.

What if Garibaldi had joined done so and died in America? At this point Italy is more or less unified, sans Venice and Lazio.

Nothing changes. Garibaldi was hardly that pivotal in Italy’s subsequent annexation of Veneto and Lazio.

Nothing changes? A major figure in the Italian Unification Wars just died fighting against slavery in the American South.

Whether this changes the annexation is Venice isn't the main point. This is going to have ramifications for Italian-American relations, the way Italians were viewed in the United States, as well as impact Garibaldi's legacy in his homeland and abroad. All of which are important and interesting avenues of exploration.

The One Thousand’s expedition already happened. Garibaldi’s legacy is already assured, and in the grand scheme of things, nothing would change. Italy would still get united the same way it did, the civil war in the US would still go the same way it did, relations between thr US and Italy would still be the same they were.

There would be no big historical change since he already made his greatest feat in the Experdition that took Southern Italy.

If he had died during the Gaucho "Farroupilha" war against the Brazilians on the other hand...

IIRC, he wanted command of the Union Army as long as the abolition of slavery was the stated goal immediately.

Now, putting the whole slavery part aside, putting a foreigner in command of the Union Army is pretty much saying "Dear my fellow Americans and all of my west point cadets/soldiers...please go screw yourselves. Obviously I have no faith in your ability to command, lead or inpire troops, this foreign fellow will be so much better...."

....what a wonderful idea.
