Garibaldi, Champion of Freedom

During the first year of the Civil War, after the disastrous defeat at Bull Run, Lincoln, agonizing over McClellan's vacillation, offered Guiseppe Garibaldi the rank of Major General and command of the Union Army. He, however, respectfully declined the offer on Sept. 10, 1861, and was wounded at Aspromonte the next year. Stanton had gotten cold feet in the meantime, and the offer was withdrawn.

What if Garibaldi had realized his work in Italy was done, and had gone on a crusade to free American blacks from slavery? How would he have done against Lee?

Well he didn't accept because he wanted Lincoln to give him complete control of the handling of the war and a declaration that emanicipation was what it was being fought over. Guess what Lincoln's answer was?
