Gandhi Lives

Say Mohandas Gandhi is not assassinated in 1948 (or ever for that matter). What happens? Does he take a position in the new gov't? How is India different going forward?

He ends up being a hero to fewer people.

What Gandhi would be doing in the 50s is interesting. Maybe he`ll obsess about reunifying Pakistan and India.

You are talking about a 78 year old gentleman with the body fat ratio of an emaciated matchstick who would go on hunger strikes often and had a strange obsession with colonic irrigation.

Just how much longer do you imagine he’d have lived?

He was never going to take any position in the government.

I suspect he would have been sidelined into irrelevancy (as he effectively was in the last stages of the Independence process). Remember, Gandhi had an agrarian pipe dream for India where everyone would go back to the land and live in harmony while the Congress government was very much into pushing national development and industrialisation. The government would trot him out on state occasions and use him strategically to quell community violence but he wouldn't have been allowed to interfere with anything important. To keep him quiet they might well have given him a commune of some sort to run, keep him distracted.
