Gaddafi annexes Chad , Impact on Francafrique

What would be the impact on Françafrique if Gaddafi had successful annexed Chad

Would it drive the remaining former french colonies closer to France or drive them away from France

If France had a right-of-center government in the 1980's, I suppose that some people would respond to this with "This is implausible unless Mitterand and the Left had won--they would never stand up to Gaddafi!"

How France deals with its not-an-empire in Africa is something that takes a lot of understanding. I like to think I understand it. I probably don't though. It's rather complicated from an outsider's perspective.

The French would have intervened whatever the political ruling colour, because messing with France in Francesphere? Jamais!

Plus in all honesty we are talking of the possible invasion of an indipendent country. In the 80's in full Reaganian period... And I think the security council would have approved whatever intervention, the USSR and China would have likely allowed it, the first because couldn't have done nothing anyway and the second to not compromise her interests in Africa... It was the best thing for Gaddafi to fail the invasion back then.

Soviet & Chinese opinions at this point are irrelevant.
France will intervene and the US & UK will support them. The US, if needed, will give material support as well.
Gaddafi’s adventure will end much more quickly and with more losses than OTL.
Depending on Gaddafi’s reaction you may see more direct strikes against him in Libya, not just in Chad.

I do not see how he of many names annexing Chad would make self-described involuntary celibates (who are likely that way due to being creepy) happy.
Chad is the straw man for incels, the person who gets all the girls and has all the friends. It was just a joke but I think they might have a chuckle over it

Heh. Yeah, Fernando Pereira could tell those people a thing or two about how much the French Socialists liked to mollycoddle the radicals.

Actually, no, he couldn't.

The consequence of Libya successfully annexing Chad, will be France successfully partitioning Libya into, well, Libya, and, um, Chad.

That demonstration will encourage the rest of Francafrique to not get annexed by Libya.

That's not a small change, actually, as quite a lot of the militaries in question are mostly internal security troops chosen for their loyalty to the boss, and not their ability to repel a foreign invasion.
