French presidential election of 2002 was one of the biggest screw up in political history, with lasting consequences even 15 years after.

April 21, 2002. The day the FN came out politically and Jospin / PS sunk to the bottom. This still has consequences nowadays, just like Gingrich revolution.

    April 21, 2002
    Round
    Jacques Chirac: 19.88%
    Lionel Jospin: 18.5 %**
    Jean Marie Le Pen: 16.88%

(**a possible POD: Christiane Taubira political career never happens, perhaps her activism in French Guyana got her jailed. Jospin OTL 16.18% + 2.32% = 18.5%. In your face, Jean Marie Le Pen !)
Or maybe Archibald, 20 years old and voting for the first time, picks up useful vote and go for Jospin, and then the butterflies do it :p )

    Round 2
Lionel Jospin defeats Jacques Chirac and become President.

What follows is a rough outline that I'll try to improve gradually.

    If Jospin had won...

    - the FN wouldn't be emboldened by their stunning breakthrough (even freakkin' J.M Le Pen was surprised by his breakthrough - the fucker had no plan whatsoever if he won round 2 ! He was aghast)

    - The FN would certainly grow, MLP was groomed to be her father heir (nepotism) sooner or later, albeit without Sarko, FN fascism might less percolate through French society overall.

    - Chirac second term would not happen, obviously (President Chirac 1995 - 2002)

    - His wife (the horrible Bernadette, the living incarnation of a witch) would not recall her beloved Nicolas Sarkozy for the sake of repairing and uniting the French Right.

A little background about Chirac and Sarkozy.

1995 was to be Chirac great moment but all of sudden, his long time "friend" Edouard Balladur, France PM since 1993, wanted to be President and stabbed him in the back. 95% of the French Right followed Balladur, which rode high in polls until March 1995, when he crashed and burned only a month before the election. Chirac made a stunning, startling return. He bet both Balladur and the left into submission and won the Presidency against all odds.
Sarkozy had been Chirac adoptive son since the 80's but Sarkozy had betrayed Chirac supporting traitor Edouard Balladur failed presidential bid. Since that day Chirac hated both Balladur and Sarko, unlike his wife Bernadette that still suports Sarko even today. Bitch.
Sarkozy went into purgatory and his life until 2002 was miserable.

    Without Chirac 2002 victory...

    - Sarkozy wouldn't be recalled by Bernadette hence he wouldn't be minister of the interior in 2002 and not president in 2007. Hopefully his political career would be ruined forever (fuck him and good riddance)

    - Sarkozy wouldn't drag the French Right in the direction of the FN fascist ideology (Grenoble speech, July 2010)

    - No François Fillon either (he was Sarko PM for five years and endured tremendous humiliation, but stuck)

On the PS side of the fence...
    - President Jospin would certainly seek a second term in May 2007
    - hence, no Segolene Royal 2007 presidential run either
    - hence no divorce with François Hollande, which wouldn't become president in 2012.
    - Also, DSK wouldn't be send by Sarko to the IMF presidency in 2009, hence in May 2011 he wouldn't screw a SOFITEL maid, albeith all the sex skeletons he had in his closet would blow in his face (pun intented) sooner or later.
    - who knows, 14 days later and also in New York, Anthony Weiner fate might be different > Huma Abedin > Hillary > butterflies > no Trump 2016...

    - Being not President, Chirac wouldn't have his presidential immunity and could have been send to jail instead of Juppé - who was IOTL scapegoat for Chirac massive corruption involving the French Right.

    - Hence Alain Juppé would be Chirac heir sooner or later on a much more moderate, saner ideology than Sarko hysterical and racist 2007 platform. Juppé could have been president either in 2007 or 2012.

    - Juppé versus Jospin would make one hell of a bizarre TV debate. Both are psychologically rigid and cold-blooded, unpassionate debaters, with a touch of cynicism.

    - also, President Jospin wouldn't had screwed up the May 2005 UE referendum as Chirac did, leading to massive butterflies - for Europe recent history.

    - Would the November 2005 riots happen ? maybe. Poor suburbs would remain hopeless places and would boil down and explodes sooner or later.

    - Tensions among French Muslims would probably still happen (9/11 still exists), albeit not to the level of the 2015-2016 horrors.

    More on this later.
