French or Dutch Brazil

The French made two attempts to seize parts of Brazil, with the second one lasting for quite some time and garnering quite a number of Indian Allies, who were left in the lurch when the French abandoned their efforts. What if the French had been able to hang onto a substantial part of Brazil?

The Dutch tried their hand in Brazil too, like they did in most of the Portuguese colonies. What if they had been able to carve out a chunk and hold onto it?

Do you have some more information about French Brazil? I am interested in it.

French Brazil is rather new to me, whereas I know about Dutch Brazil. During the war of Dutch independence (80y war), Portugal was in personal union with 'Spain'; and the Dutch conquered some of these colonies. The Dutch gave most of these back, but WI we didn't. It could be good for the Republic, but it would also affect later Dutch colonies.

Yes it existed, two times. One in Rio de Janeiro, which the Portuguese destroyed and after they founded the city of Rio de Janeiro.
And other in Sao Luis, which the French founded as Saint Louis and then the Portuguese conquered.

French Brazil was discussed here before:

French Brazil?

French Brazil

Antarctique?

France Antartique

French or Dutch Brazil

The greatest problem with the France Antartique is that the French had a small population that was divided by religious hate, during a period of civil war in France, when the Crown could not support such adventures. When the government finally tried to colonize South America again (the Saint Louis colony) the settlers were so few that they were defeated by a single troop sent from Pernambuco with no help from either Portugal or Castile (it was during the Iberian Union period).

I think that French Brazil is a possibility, but you would need either an earlier POD with no religious wars in France or a later POD, when the French power would be much stronger.

:confused:France had a larger population than Britain, let alone Portugal.

True, they were distracted by religious strife, and they didn't use it to their advantage as Britain did (let the heretics flee across the Atlantic), but they were certainly capable of a stronger colonization effort.

I meant French population in France Antartique, not in Europe.
