French Naples

What if , during the Italian Wars, France retained Naples and Milan? What would be the effects on Italy of a French Naples and Milan? Could the French mount a crusade against the Turks from Naples as Charles VIII planned? What PoD is needed to make this happen?

Weakening of the Church further since the French were far more anti-clerical in their political outlook than the Spanish could ever dream to be. I think plans for a crusade would fade as soon as the Spanish mounted a counter-attack, which is inevitable. Even after the War of Spanish Succession when Spain was severely weakened, it limped its way back into trying to recover its Italian regions. Decadance drives a lot of irrational moves.

The Italians typically didn't like any single power taking a dominant position in Italy, especially (but not only) when that single power was foreign. The result would be the Italians uniting together and starting a number of wars against France in an attempt to remove them from the peninsula. Owning Naples and Milan is a massive advantage - France's traditional rivals (Spain, the HRE, England) would be none too happy about them having that much power, either.

Would the Italians really be that successful though? Look at Spain. The Spanish pretty much ran Italy for almost 2 centuries, so the French could pull off the same.

Depends I guess. Depends on the support they receive from outside Italy, and how quickly they act to dislodge the French. But yes, it's entirely possible they could fail.

Edit: Italy, not Spain. I was too tired when I wrote this.

what is the best pod for this? maybe Louis XII defeats the Spanish in Naples and Ferdinand of Aragon is unable to expel him?

It depends on the POD. It's going to be hard for France to hold onto Naples against constant pressure from the Habsburgs and Italian states. France also has their own internal religious problems to deal with, can they really hold onto Naples against Spain at the height of their powers? I'd think French domination of Italy likely to be a temporary situation.

Would no Spain make it more possible? Also, even temporarily(50 years?) This has huge butterflies in Italy...

It depend how they also run theses place, would they leave them relative autonomy or would they go for direct control? I do think getting Savoy and Milan and keeping them is possible but Naples I don't think so.
