Casually found about this this morning, and since there is a spike of "French X" threads...

The French Incident was a military intervention by the Kingdom of the French to end the persecution of Catholics by the Kingdom of Hawaii, which had been promoted by Protestant ministers in Hawaii. Under the threat of war, King Kamehameha III agreed to the French demands to stop the detention of Catholic citizens and pay reparations.

So WI France had pushed for annexation of Hawaii by 1860?

Probably a diplomatic incident with the UK for a start, though I couldn't speculate as to whether it would turn into a full-blown war, or whether or not the French would get away with their annexation.
