French-American War over Mexico?

Could the Americans intervene and declare war on the French during the French intervention in Mexico? What effect would this have on other European nations.

We had this discussion on here a while back. Consensus was that the US wouldn't declare war on France, but would lavishly equip the Mexicans opposing Maximilian's rule. War was certainly a possibility, though, since in OTL, the US did place an 'Army of Observation' in Texas...
