French All Red Line?

Hi all,

The English colonies were all linked by the All Red Line, the telegraph network.

However, I have never been able to find what the French were using.

Were they using the All Red Line with a few more bits? Did they build their own parallel network?

Cheers!

AFAIK the French struggled with adapting to the telegraph network across their Empire, as their terrain was more diverse than that served by the All Red Line (which concentrated on the major white colonies and India particularly).

From page 122 of this book gives a good intro, although some pages aren't viewable (sorry - don't have my physical copy to hand): https://books.google.co.uk/books?id...page&q=telegraph system french empire&f=false

Seems like the Congo was a particularly troublesome area, with conditions meaning the lines were down often. The wireless, coming in the 1910s, was more successful for the French Empire.
