Fremont didn't exactly get very close to winning. But, I have heard the South was ready to declare secession and go to war if the Republicans won. And, the North was much more ready to let the South have their independence. Plus, Fremont wasn't exactly Abraham Lincoln.
Finding a way for Fremont to win is one huge issue. But, imagine a short, protracted civil war that gives away to Fremont declaring a split of the union pretty soon after fighting begins. Not that there won't be a war later, over squabbles with the territories.
