Frederick Barbarossa

Just wondering, what would have happened if Frederick Barbarossa truly had 100,000 men for the Third Crusade? Sources say that he had probably 20,000-30,000 men for the Third Crusade. What would be the response of everyone participating in the Third Crusade, hearing that he truly has 100,000 men? I wonder the particularler response of Saladin, as i heard he was extremely worried that Barbarossa was approaching and that he was with 20,000-30,000 men.

What sources are those Tongera? the lands under his control could easily support the recruitment of that number;with 20-30 thousand he would never have gone through the Balcans;the Byzantine army of the Comnenoi would have anihilated them. They had really horrific experiences by the destruction and murder of civilians in the previous crusade. The chances are that they were very near that number.

Bear in mind also that the route after Asia minor was dry with sparce water and food sources for such great an army and was offered for ambush...

The sources were on several websites, which i probably should have checked before-hand. Also, no answer about the effect of him bringing (or attempting to bring) 100,000 men?

Also during the Thrid Crusade, the Byzantines let them through to Asia minor.

Also, did you get my pm?

well for one thing he still couldn't take egypt:p I mean quite honestly with the fall of the kingdom of jerusalum to saladin unless saladin dies(even then he has may capable sons to succeed him) Fredrick and his army will be worn down. After all to feed, supply, and pay 100000 men requires a lot of money. Also it was the angeloi i believe in the third crusade not comnenoi and quite frankly Alexius III i think was ruler then was a spineless coward and an ineffective and opulent ruler. Comparing the army of the byzantines under him and the comnenoi is simply not possible because the Comnenoi army was under Alexius, John, and even Manuel a very powerful force that commanded respect and was one of the best armies in the known world at the time, not the laughing stock of Europe and the near east as it was known by the time of Alexius III( don't forget that many brilliant generals had already revolted and were put down during this time as well i believe and lack of funds and all that cut it down even more and all the looting and pillaging under the normans after what they did to during the reign of Andronikos Komennos really took its toll on the byzantines..

Sides that at best i can see Fredrick conquering up tot he sinai maybe reaching the delta but taking Cairo and the rest of Egypt not possible by then his large army would be worn down, exhausted and unlikely to be successful. Remember at the lime supply and money wise for 100k men you had to do a lot and given how the HRE wasted so much of its money on wars with the lombard leauge, its neighbors, and the internal wars(aka beetween henry the liona nd Fredrick) i honestly dont see how such a vast sum of money can continue to be paid to soldiers.
