What if Franz decides that Helena, Elisabeth's older sister was infact the right choice for a wife? In OTL, he chose the 16 year old sisi over his arranged marriage and she proceeded to abandon him due to her mental illness. By choosing the stable sister he could have concievablely had his son Rudolf survive and succeed him to the throne, thus dealing without Franz Ferdinand and the rest of the mess of the 20th century.

What could have been the other knock on effects?

Yes, it would have enormously stabilised A.-H and the dynasty, although the son produced would not have been Rudolf. However remember that Rudolf's death may not have been suicide as it it said he had been the go-between in negotiations with the French for an alliance, and they did not wish this to come out when they failed.
