Historically, the New York governor race of 1928 was decided by less than a percent. So what if a few less Democrats come out, and Albert Ottinger becomes governor rather than FDR? Ottinger was Jewish, so it's unlikely he becomes a national figure, but what happens to Roosevelt? Even if he does run for governor again in 1930(he'd likely win handily, I suspect) I don't think he'd be nearly as strong a contender for the presidential nomination as he was in OTL. Does this mean Al Smith gets the nomination and presidency that year? Or would it be more likely that someone else would emerge from the shadows and with FDR's support, take the nomination?
