Franco restores Estado Novo after Carnation Revolution

After the Carnation Revolution, could Francoist Spain launch an invasion and restore Estado Novo

Would this be successful

Since Portugal was a NATO country and Spain wasn't, it definitely would not be successful. Probably leads to an earlier end to his regime and a more thorough destruction of Francoist influence in Spain.

We could actually have a scenario where both US and Soviets would of agreed for UN sanctions and even military action. The US could not of risked supporting Franco since he was invading NATO member plus Soviets would of voted for it due to the new government being left wing and communists having a legit chance of forming government.

I forget that Portugal was member of NATO during that time

Say Portugal isn't a part of NATO, Would it be successful ?

No because Portugal also has the Windsor treaty with Great Britain which could of been activated. Plus regardless of if it was not part of NATO then Europe and US would of reacted.

This was never an option. Only if estado novo controlled part of country and asked Franco for help but not afyervit had fallen

Getting Portugal out of NATO would require a much more hardline and isolationist Estado Novo leadership, which would have consequences...

Also, you'd need to break Portugal's long standing alliance with Britain somehow...

Speaking in purely hypothetical turns, I think that a Spanish militairy victory would be feasible. Franco has the numbers, and most of Portugal's militairy assets are still stationed in the colonies anyway. That said, the new Portuguese government is not going to give up without a fight, and civillian resistance will be huge, both against the Spanish invasion and the restored Estado Novo.

I really can't picture any scenario in which something like this could happen and not cause the immediate colapse of Francoist Spain

I was thinking they just don't join like Spain during the period

Could they just not recognize the new government and either Marcelo Caetano or Americo Tomas requests an intervention

Would the Spanish population raise up ?
