Franco-British Union

My apologies if this has been on here before, I'm new.

I recently came across the fact that a union was proposed between France and Great Britain during the Second World War, and was intended to encourage Prime Minister Reynaud and keep the government fighting against Nazi Germany. However, IOTL it faced opposition in the French cabinet in favor of an armistice with the Third Reich.

How do you all think such a union would play out, both during the war, and after it?

I see a quick and easy victory in North Africa in the Summer of 1940. The big question is what does Japan do with French Indo China.

It is an interesting POD. It might come down to how much the French military and civilians would be willing to tolerate a Union with the UK.

Japan most likely will keep their fingers of FIC, but may still go to War later on.

Reinforce East Africa with forces from Syria. No delay on Compass from swapping the Indian and Australian divisions. El Algheia falls in January 1941 by which time French forces in North Africa have reorganised. Tripoli falls after about a month. The expeditionary force to Greece is reinforced by the French units that evacuates to England. Allied intervention in Greece starts a month ahead of OTL. Crete holds. The allies can now use the Med for convoys to the Far East. What next?

What does everybody think that the Japanese will do about French Indo China? OTL they invaded in September 1940, to stop the supply line to the Chimese. ITTL that would mean war with the Franco British Union.

Well as I understand things the Japanese saw a power vaccuum in FIC after France fell in OTL. Here France is stronger and in league with the UK. They may still try to force a cut off in trade with China but I do not think they will land troops for a takeover. At least not as soon as they did in OTL.

not going to happen, as the Italians still control Sicilly and Pantelleria.

Pacific War is either butterflied away entirely or has the Japanese start from Hainan instead of FIC - meaning Malaya, and thus at least the western part of the Dutch East Indies, hold. Japan has no oil and no victory disease, and agrees to a humiliating peace after throwing away most of their heavy ships.

Iv read several Brit-Franco union story's on this site sadly iv lost them if people to post the links to any they know that would be great thanks

And how about afterwards? Do you think it would be able to stay together? To what extent? If they separate from full political union, France might still be a part of the Commonwealth, or otherwise retain some degree of connection to the Brits afterwards.

It would mame for some intersting developments if they maintained a connection.

How might it effect decolonization I wonder?

I don't think it would stay fully together.

I reckon that the French and British people and politicians will be very friendly post-war. Most likely the Union wouldn't hold but I expect everything else. Possibly forming the nucleus of a Franco-British dominated EU and them forming a third alliance block in the Cold War with several other nations. In this situation I imagine all of Scandinavia being apart of it.

Though I don't think this version of the EU will drive for full unification to form a European Superstate due to the UK being a founder.

A additional knock off may be the UK keeping closer relations and trade links to the Commonwealth with the UKs economy and military being less banged up, possibly the UK pushes France to being less violent in the break-up of its overseas empire.
