Franco-British Union

Apparently after the failure of the Suez Crisis, French prime minister Guy Mollet suggested a union with the UK, with common citizenship and Elizabeth II as head of state. What if this was true and was accepted? How would that effect relations with the US and Soviet Union? Would Argentina still invade the Falklands? Would decolonisation still happen?

A minute-long conversation with an average person on the street of either Paris or London would persuade you that this idea is utterly ridiculous.

Seeing as the British and the French have been trying to kill each other for the better part of the last millennium, I'm fairly sure that this idea would not have much, if any, popular support. I'd support it, just to annoy people.

If we're (Britain) are the senior partner :D i could live with it :D

You are. You Queen is head of State.

Of course, to compensate, Parliament has to be in Paris

Or Versailles, if you prefer

And house of lords has to be abolished, of course. We've got just the tool for that

well if the french get representation then expect the UK to swing harder to the right and left in the 70s

This Got Brought up a LOT, In The Mid-20th Century ...

It was Even a Suggested Remedy Following Dunkirk ...

As LordMoogi Noted However, Mutual Dis-Interest Killed it Every Time!

:D

And what about Algeria?
With the added power and skill of the British armed forces, who were successfully battling communists in Malaya, would the French be willing to give it independence?

My British history isn't as complete as I wish it was, but wasn't a similar idea adopted when Scotland and England united? The Scotish monarch reigns while the Parliment is in London?

Not that I could ever see a Franco-British Union happening mind you. It's only in the last hundred years that France and Britain have been close allies. Before that... they'd happily throw the other a lead weight if they were drowning. :p

If Britain and France were to unite then I could see the French allying with the Celtic countries to kick out England.

The English, as always, mutter, grumble, and carry on with their lives.
