Franco-British Union in June 1940

Imagine that the last ditch plan uniting Franco-British Union, had come to fruition? How might that have effected World War II and the post-war era? The obvious effect is the French continue fighting, not just in North Africa, but in southern France.

The final "DECLARATION OF UNION" approved by the British War Cabinet stated that[1]
France and Great Britain shall no longer be two nations, but one Franco-British Union. The constitution of the Union will provide for joint organs of defence, foreign, financial and economic policies. Every citizen of France will enjoy immediately citizenship of Great Britain, every British subject will become a citizen of France.

Intersting, i didnt even know this plan existed.

Probably, Earth will be covered by a thick stratum of butterflies. If the Union manages to hold its ground against the Nazis though, it will probably become the core of an ATL "European Union". I can see West Germany, or the equivalent of it, joining the Union after the war.

Canada might well be more stable if the Quebeqios now find that their mother country and that of the rest of the nation are united.

French India is probably annexed into British India, while the Alt-Commonwealth would be very interesting.

I actually think it more likely that it would be BENELUX which joins the ATL EU first rather than West Germany, followed perhaps by Portugal.

The colonial politics of the Franco-British Union are an area where you could see a lot of conflicts between the various constituent parts of the Union. France will very likely try to invest heavily in her colonies for the duration of the war, both in order to get more war potential out of them, but also in order not to be fully absorbed into Britain so to speak and highlight the Franco in Franco-British Union. Britain won't do this on the other hand, seeding the seeds of disagreements and conflicts during the fifties when the decolonisation question will rear its head. I will cover this in my TL and it will be a driver behind the shaky nature of the Union during the early fifties.

A Franco-British Union can lead Europe by itself and won't need West Germany indeed.

Others questions to ask: Would a Franco-British Union even want to work that closely with West Germany, if indeed West Germany exists.

This was a wasted oportunity. Such union might have limited the US influence in western Europe.
For Germany we need to see how the war would have gone.

I will cover this during the post war chapters of my TL in deatil. The short answer is yes and no. Yes the Union will want to have West Germany onboard as a trade partner and as a market for its goods and produce. But no the Union won't need West Germany in the same way as France "needed" West Germany as a partner OTL.

Fear not there will be a West Germany in Sword of Freedom, whose borders might even be quite different from the OTL ones.

Not sure it would have stopped the sovereignty movement. The quebecois have an obvious connection to France (though not as strong as you might think) but its not as if it would change our status. For one thing, in 1940, canadians were not british subjects anymore so our citizenship wouldn't be affected in any way or grant us any more independance.

In 1940 Canadians were British Subjects. Canadian citizenship legally came about in 1947 although there was a domicile status before then. The 1947 citizenship act said that a Canadian citizen is a British subject. The current act does not have that feature in it and the line "a Canadian citizen is a British subject" was removed from Canadian passports in 1977.

If there is still the event that lead him to power.

Well since the Franco-British Union, for the sake of time the FBU, is still in a bad position, it probably won't take France back until Overlord. If there is still a collaborationist government. Since the POD doesn't stop the Holocaust, Israel is still created. The Egyptians still go to war with the Israeli's. The Association of Free Officers is still created Nasser still gains control. I suppose if the FBU decides to back King Farouk, Nasser is still supported by the US and the Soviet Union, meaning that the FBU is going against both creating basically a third coalition. If Nasser goes for a power move, the FBU gets involved in an Egyptian War with the Americans and Soviets supporting the Revolutionaries. If the FBU lands forces in Egypt, they could potentially get Israeli support, unless the US advises them not to. So you have an Egyptian Civil War turned quagmire.

I take you don't believe in butterfly. What make you think there will be the same event during the war or even after it? The war might even be shorter. Collaborationist government would have 0 legitimacy and authority.

Its a collaborationist government. They are propped up by a Nazi government, who are the authority of the land. Essentially while there is still Free French Forces they are under the shared control of the British. I think there will be Partisans in France, but they won't be as difficult as the Russians. Also I think a lot of French people might find the Franco-British Union as not a hugely great option and a collaborationist government would still be a, in some ways, French government.
