Franco - British Union 1956
In September 1956, Franco - British relations were probably at the closest they have ever been, due to the Suez Crisis.
At the time it was proposed by the then French Prime Minister, Guy Mollet, that the two nations unify with a single citizenship and with The Queen as Head of State. Or as an alternative, France proposed that it joined the Commonwealth.
Ultimatley both proposals were rejected and Fraance went on to Sign the Treaty of Rome, which of course led to the creation of the EEC, then the EU.
However what would the consequences of a unified Franco-British state of been? Could such a union of lasted? Or would it have ultimatley turned into a slight varient of the EU?
