Franco- British Union 1956

Franco - British Union 1956
In September 1956, Franco - British relations were probably at the closest they have ever been, due to the Suez Crisis.

At the time it was proposed by the then French Prime Minister, Guy Mollet, that the two nations unify with a single citizenship and with The Queen as Head of State. Or as an alternative, France proposed that it joined the Commonwealth.

Ultimatley both proposals were rejected and Fraance went on to Sign the Treaty of Rome, which of course led to the creation of the EEC, then the EU.

However what would the consequences of a unified Franco-British state of been? Could such a union of lasted? Or would it have ultimatley turned into a slight varient of the EU?

Repost from the other thread:

I think that something like the EEC and later EU would have developed, perhaps a few years later on, but a Franco-British Union would still have the same economic issues as France and the UK and really Western Europe had overall.

I dunno anything would have happened. Just two old great powers, one humiliated in war and the other having bankrupted itself winning it, adjusting to the new world order.

I suppose they just teamed up as they had since the start of the 20th century to achieve common goals, but realised neither were in a position to act entirely independently anymore.

Maybe if France had joined the Commonwealth other nations might have gone on to do so, leading to the Commonwealth becoming an embryonic equivalent of the EFTA?

Keep it going till now and even as just a trading block it would be powerful; Britain, France, India, Australia, South Africa etc. plus any European nations that would have sought to join... Norway? Portugal? Greece?
