WI Germany had decided that its best chance in a World War was to do enough damage to Russia to get it to accept a German Victory and to stand defensive in the West.
In OTL, if I recall correctly, the rather weak German force on the then frontier did rather well against a French offensive in the very early days.
Suppose Between 1910 and 1914 French Generals worked out that offensives on a short front cost too much blood.
Imagine that Britain and France had still formed an Entente and that French making the war plan had decided it was a bit awkward to mention it aggressive plans to new friends.
How does Britain react?
Oh and might Belgium have simply agreed to allow French troops through- as they refused the Germans in OTL.
