France May 1940 - German attack - total surprise?

Am currently reading Mosiers 'Verdun'. He remarks in several passages on the disconnect between reality and preconceived notions by Joffre & his sucessors staff. Gamelin is one of those on Joffres staff who had trouble with the idea of examining the actual battlefield events critically against the plans and concepts.

Either I was testing to see who is paying attention, or was using a cell phone on which I've not yet disabled the utterly incompetent and wholly anoying auto correct.

I find if you hold a hammer in one hand rest the phone against a hard surface then bring the hammer down vigorously several times it will fix any phone problem. It can be expensive but very theraputic when phones are giving you trouble. :openedeyewink:

He did indeed. Problem was that he had done so multiple times before. IIRC the Dutch forces were put on high alert though.
I would add the Dutch forces were caught off-guard, but not by being attacked - but by how they were attacked. The paratroopers at Rotterdam made the attacks faster than Dutch troops could really respond to, but more precise warning on the when of the attack wouldn't have done much. Nearly all the bridges on the IJssel and Maas were blown up succesfully (along with dozens of bridges over smaller waterways) despite being attacked within the first hours of the attack.
