In the aftermath of WW2 France was politically divided you had the remnants of Vichy, communists, and de Gaullists,

What if say around the end of 1945 or the beginning of 1946 France had descended into civil war between these factions?

Maybe De Gaulle has a heart attack and dies at the end of WW2.

What would a civil war in late forties France look like and how it would affect the development of NATO, the European Union, and the course of the Cold War?

I have often heard that France and Italy were the likely candidates for a post-WW2 Civil War.

In the case of Italy this makes sense to me, strong communist party, organized partisans and the collapse of the Fascism are a background for a Civil War.

But France ? I would be really interested to hear more about that.

The prime minister of the post war era is a man called Robert Schumann, very committed to the alliance with the western democracies. The communists were controlled by Michael torensz. There were a number of Vichy second tier actors. It could lead to an interesting uprising.

Would the British and Americans step in almost straight away to tell them to knock that crap off?

Yep, most likely the British and American occupation forces in Germany and remaining forces in Britain help put down any civil war quite quickly.
