France decides to export republicanism to its neighbours?

What if the french after the revolution of 1789 had decided that they wanted to attempt to export Republicanism covertly to its neighbours?

I mean like the USSR tried to export Communism in the 20th Century?

How could this have been untaken by the french?

You should have the Girondins beat out the Montagnards in the National Convention as the Girondins in generally supported creating sister republics and the like, while the Montagnards supported 'republicanism in one country' to borrow an expression.

Uh... thats... what happened? Cisalpine Republic, Cisrhenanian Rpeublic, Ligurian Republic, Batavian Republic, Italian Republic etc? Of course, once Bonaparte took over, they all were transformed into neo-monarchies. But did Revolutionary France ever try to export republicanism!

I'm pretty sure they did so under Robespierre and the Directory...supposing Napoleon dies early I guess this strategy of imposing sister republics will work but said republics will have even less support than Napoleon's puppet states did (and that was with Nappy attempting to coopt local notables and aristocrats).

The french did try to export their ideas in some form or other to their neighbors. However, given how most of those neighbors cracked down on those ideas and invaded france after louis was recaptured and the revolution became truly radical, they tended to go about exporting those ideas via the revolutionary armies. A more passive spread requires a chance to spread, which means a more moderate revolution, less controls by the rulers elsewhere, and/or time for revolutionary france to coalesce and be accepted by the rest of europe, all of which the USSR had to some degree when it began exporting communism.

Although those mentioned republics were occupied by French armies, and were regularly plundered to enrich France. So I wouldn't really consider this "exporting republicanism."

Perhaps if France does not declare war upon Austria, and later war is somehow averted. The French then support a rebellion in the Austrian Netherlands, as well as a restoration of the Dutch Patriots. Something similar could be orchestrated in Italy, as from what I've read it seemed that revolution was brewing there as well.
