Louis XVI and his ministers had hoped for an economic boost from the American republic they had stood as midwife to. France had expended an enormous amount of money (someone saying that the first shot of this war will be enough to push this nation to bankruptcy), and received very little from the Americans, who continued doing business with England. Is there a way that Louis could perhaps have it enshrined in a sort of official agreement/treaty that outlines what France is to expect from a successful American Revolution? Perhaps that the Americans are to pay annual installments of the money owed to France? Or what would France have expected from a successful outcome to the Revolution? Trade-ports? Trading-privileges? Assistance in a reconquering of Quebec?
