Fourth Great Awakening

Say the bullet misses Reverend King, and the religious revival he was part of reaches the level of the previous Great Awakenings.

What would the effects be?

FWIW, I've got a rough draft TL on this where it results in Nixon being a one term President -- you know MLK is going to make his enemies list, and that Dick is going to be a major target in his sermons.

To my mind, the 4th Great Awakening DID happen, and there is a religious/"spiritual" left--its just that the left part of the Great Awakening of the late 60s and 70s wasn't Christian.

So what this POD gives you is more of a religious Christian left to match the religious Christian right.

Personally, I think that this could really diffuse the Christian Right altogether. Remember, at this point in time, the Christian Right wasn't anywhere near influential, and it didn't become so until at least the late seventies and early eighties. Martin Luther King leading a left-wing spiritual revival might butterfly that away completely and result in, say, a Democratic Party dependent upon the Christian Left and a more secular Republican Party.
