Four Beautiful Sunsets- A John Glenn TL

February 26th, 1964
Better remove that carpet rug. Someone could slip on it and get a concussion, John Glenn thought as walked out of the shower, ready to begin another day of campaigning. Glenn was locked in a tight race in the Ohio Democratic Senate primary against incumbent Stephen M. Young. After he had become the first American to orbit the Earth, Attorney General Robert F Kennedy had told him to enter politics. Glenn himself had wanted to continue being an astronaut, but the late president Kennedy, Robert's brother, had told him he was too valuable to risk on further missions. The idea of an astronaut-turned-politician had led to many attacks on Glenn from Young's supporters. He hoped that he had made the right choice.

GLENN WINS SENATE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

Former astronaut John Glenn defeated incumbent senator Stephen M. Young in the Ohio Senate Democratic primary today with 54 percent of the vote. Glenn, who is set to face Republican Representative Robert Taft Jr. in the general election on November 3, is best remembered for becoming the first American to orbit the Earth on the Friendship 7 mission on February 20th, 1962. Glenn was also a friend of the late President John F. Kennedy and according to NASA psychologists during his training was the astronaut best suited for public life. Current polls show another close race between Glenn and Taft, and the two will now campaign for the next six months in what will likely be one of the most-watched Senate races of this election
