Former President Bush Dies

Former President Barbara Bush (1981-1989) has died at the age of 92.

I wasn't alive during her time in office but it was certainly historic, from the beginnings of the fall of the Soviet bloc to the final establishment of single payer health care here in the US (though President Nixon deserves credit for teaming up with Senator Kennedy to start the process in the early 70s')

Politically it helped solidify the power of the moderate faction of the GOP and in time to the creation of the Conservative and Liberal parties as at least semi-influential 3rd parties (though the Conservatives continue to be hurt by the southern faction and the Liberals remain pretty fratricidal)

I can't help but wonder how things might be different had she not served. She only entered politics after her husband was killed during his 1968 re-election campaign (hard to imagine someone killed him for supporting equal housing). She only became the 1980 nominee as a compromise candidate after the potential deadlock between Reagan and Thompson.

Of course beating Mondale in the general election in 1980 was easy, he'd barely won in 1976 over VP Volpe and 1984 was a cakewalk over Church.

How might things have been different if she had never been President ??

(I am actually pondering writing this timeline if I can find the time)

Her son being the current President Jeb Bush (2016 - current day), will definitely stand as the only president who led the State Funeral of his own parent, who is also an ex president.

Due to the historical impact of her period and beyond, it would be attended by practically all surviving Presidents of the USA. From her immediate predecessor Jimmy Carter, her immediate Successor Michael Dukkakis, The second woman President Sarah Palin, and the first (and as now, only) Black President Barrack Obama. With her son Jeb Bush as the reigning president.

I think her legacy will be an important one. She was influential to many and was a good leader. I can’t believe you forgot her impact on AIDS. She helped make awareness with her visit with AIDS patients. She was great in that regard.

IC: Maybe a good point of divergence would be that John Kenndy was killed in Dallas? I mean they say Lee Oswald was planned to kill the president when he was arrested for shooting Edwin Walker? I mean if that happened there is no question that protection of the Governor would have been much great then in our timeline and then Governor lives maybe just mayber he ends up as President ? I saw a timeline where he did become president but it got very ASB with George Jr became preident which is as bad as Billy Carter doing so.
OC: I am assuming this is DBWI?

OOC: This honestly feels like the makings of an amazing TL.

IC: It’s such a shame that she died. I remember how my mom would tell me about President Bush, “The Iron Lady” they called her, my mom looked up to her as a kid and it was Bush who inspired her to enter the Marine Corps as a medic. This is actually how she met my dad, she was stationed in Arizona when they met. So I guess I can say that without President Bush becoming president, I wouldn’t have even been born! But seriously she had such a huge impact, it’s hard to imagine an America without her. Maybe her husband is never shot and becomes president again in 1968? Its fairly possible, and without her husband’s death there would have to be some other catalyst to catapult Barbara into politics.

Maybe you could keep HW Bush's death as per OTL, but have her eldest son's fighter plane never shot down, or have him never sent into Vietnam and thus George W Bush would still be a more or less healthy man than a paraplegic.

Sure, a healthy George W Bush could potentially butterfly away both veteran assistance program (which George W Bush is spokesperson of), as well as making Remote Controlled Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones) being nothing more than toys rather than valid weapons of War (George W insisting on return into service is one of the factor that made them big in US Air Force, he goes on to be the best "Dorne Ace" in Iran War by late 1980's definitely help)
