For Want of a tire: the presidency of George W. Romney

President Romney- in 1968

Carpet bagger's alternate president's game got me thinking: what if Governor George W. Romney's (Mitt Romney's father) brainwashing gaffe never happened and he was able to secure the nomination? So what if his campaign bus has a flat tire and he never has his interview with Lou Gordon?

I'm thinking about making a timeline out of it but I want to bounce the idea around a little before I start.

You can see Carpetbagger's list here:

George Romney would easily win in 1968. Nixon wanted to build his Republican Majority in the South and West, but Romney wouldn't do that. Romney would build a coalition of Big Business, African Americans, Feminists, Anti War people, and (possibly) the New Left could drift over to the GOP over time.

The Democrats keep the South, and almost nothing else for keeps. I say the Dems combine their Economic Populism with the Religious Right, and Scoop Jackson's not yet named neo conservatism.

So we pretty much have the same political scene as we did in the 1870's- 1920's: The Democrats have the South, and the GOP has to win 3/4 of all Northern and Western EV's to win.

I actually think the list I posted (and big_ben mi solved) could be the actual list of presidents ITTL.

Would it even be constitutionally possible for him to become president? As he was not born in the U.S. or in American territory for that matter.

After I do some reading about Romney I think I'm going to do a timeline. I want to make sure that you don't mind or plan on doing one on Romney. I may use your list as a guide to where I'll take it, so if you want we could collaborate on it. Either way any help would be nice.

That was the same for McCain and in PI, Fernando Poe in '04.[/quote
If I'm not mistaken John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone which was U.S. terrritory between 1904 to 1999. Fernando Poe Jr. ran for president of the Phillippinnes not the US, totally irrelevent.
