For Want of a Coalition

In OTL (in the mid-500s), the Göktürks were able to conquer their former overlords, the Rouran, with the help of other central Asian tribes and a couple Chinese states. In the TL I'm writing, such a coalition doesn't form, but I'm not at all an expert on 6th century Asian history, so I don't know exactly what the implications of this would be. I already have the Göktürks fleeing Mongolia, coming into the 'stans', and conquering the Hephthalites, who were on their last legs at that time anyway. Is anyone here knowledgeable in that arena? What would the results of a surviving Rouran state be? Would this affect the Avar invasion of Europe?

One thing I can thing of - Old Great Bulgaria (Onoguria?) will survive on the Crimean Peninsula (Taurica). This means no Bulgar invasion of Europe, no Bulgarian Slavs, and a strong Byzantium on that end as a result. Also, there would be no Khazars, and not many organized Turkic states in the Caucasus. Which may have interesting implications when the Abbasids invade through there.

What would end up happening is that other tribes will take the Gokturks' place. The steppe was a harsh mistress and even vagaries of weather might send tribes back and forth.

Well, the thing is, the alternate fate of the Göktürks is a butterfly, not the P.O.D. Already in my timeline (which I believe you've read already, as you've posted in the thread) the Byzantines have been conquered by the Ostrogoths. Also, a later Hunnic return to the Steppes results in a much earlier migration of the Bulgars into Europe, and they already control northern Thrace and *Wallachia (where they dominate over the early Slavic group of the Sclaveni).
