For the want of four votes.

In 1713, the House of Lords voted on dissolution of the Union between England and Scotland. It failed by four votes. How would history develop had the vote passed?

By what extent?

Anyway Scotland's back in the gutter and we struggle along as the poor man of Europe.

Dissolving the political Union does not mean that the Personal Union is dissolved.

So the effects could be relatively small and then when the Irish Act of Union goes into effect around 1800, Scotland can be rolled back in again.

Except, without the Scots union, would the Irish one happen? I doubt it strongly. I think they'd come up with some other solution.

Butterflies would ensure that the Irish Union of 1800 does not happen in anything like the manner it did IOTL.

I assume you were also watching Neil Oliver's excellent "History of Scotland" on BBC2 last night? Really enjoying it so far.
