For The Future: An ATL of LBJ against Romney in 1968

What POD should I start my President Infinity TL with

  • Clinton wins nomination in '08 with Obama as her VP versus Romney/McCain

    Votes: 3 42.9%
  • Open primaries in '80 with Reagan disabled

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • FDR does not die, runs in '48; open republican primary

    Votes: 1 14.3%
  • LBJ runs in '68; open republican primary

    Votes: 3 42.9%
  • Pence/Kasich versus Warren/Castro in 2020

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Other (suggest)

    Votes: 0 0.0%

  • Total voters
    7
  • Poll closed .
I want to start an election map TL with some supplementary story to go with it as a sort of test for PI as well as world building

I want to know which POD sounds coolest to you all!

If it says open primary then that just means I will allow the primary to run and whoever wins the nomination wins the primary

I will not be interfering in the simulation and will be sitting idle as a third party candidate

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to...

The Johnson Administration (1963-1973)

President: Lyndon Baines Johnson
Vice-President: Terry Sanford

Senate (as of 1973)
Democrats: 57
Republicans: 43

House (as of 1973)
Republicans: 230
Democrats: 205

Average approval rating: 61%

Johnson found his victory to be extremely bittersweet; he had lost the popular vote and had only won the electoral vote due to congressional intervention. Nonetheless, he continued his term with where he left off; pushing civil rights reform and trying to end the clusterfuck that was Vietnam. A peace agreement was reached on October 14th, 1972 which solidified Northern Vietnamese control over the area. The US government had spent the previous 2 years quickly shoveling troops out of 'Nam to save face. Poor protests continued throughout his presidency, though not to the extent that they had been previously.

Johnson's old age and failing health, coupled with the strain of running a superpower took a toll on the man's ability to push through legislation and as a result, the civil rights reforms stagnated significantly (though still progress was made, just no more than IOTL).

Now it's time for America to pick a successor to LBJ. The Democrats will find it tough to maintain control now that the New Deal Coalition is hardly existent, but Johnson's moderately successful term may prove to the Republicans that this won't be an easy sweep.
