For the eternal Glory of Milan, and a unified Italy

This is my First time line so be gentle. As the title suggest the timeline is about the unification of Italy under the banner of Milan. the POD is that in 1402 Gian Galeazzo Visconti recovers for the fever that kills him in OTL and makes Milan makes the dominate state in northern Italy.(also sorry in advance for any bad Grammar)

1402: Gian recovers from his illness. Gian had just destroyed a combined force Florentine and Bolognese troops a month earlier. The Florentines and the Venetians combined the troops and begin to make their way to Milan to knock destroy Milan. Gian rushes his troops to a town 75 miles from Milan called Rovato. On one side of the town were Gian and his influential general Facino Cane in command of a force of 12 000 men. On the other side was Venetian- Florentine force of 16 000 under the command of Francesco Novello da Carrara.

The forces collided on the eastern part of town on September 18 1402. As the battle looked like it was be a Venetian victory when Cane struck a devastating cavalry strike to their left flank collapsing their line and killing de Carrara. The entire army was either killed, captured, or deserted. It had been the worst defeat in Venetian history.

The victory gain the respect and the admiration of the much of the Holy Roman Empire and the current emperor Rupert. Gian begins to march on venice conquering trent and many of western territories before it sued for peace.

1403: winter has passed and Gian begins a new offensive to destroy Florence once a for all. Gian quickly begin to conquer the various minor city-states of around Florence. He begins a year long siege on the city. During this time he begins to look for future friends and allies and sees them in Naples, Aragon, Austria, and other states in the Holy Roman Empire. He marries his daughter to King of Naples son, and marrying his other daughter to King of Austria thus securing an alliance with both.
1404: Florence surrenders to Gian on February 13th 1404. In the City of Pavia leaders of Milan, Venice, Florence, various city-states, and Holy Roman Emperor/ King of the Germans Rupert. other states to discuss terms. The Treaty of Pavia ended the Milanese wars. The Treaty gave Milan all of the city states in conquered, Padua, and the coast of and much of the surrounding areas of Florence. Also Venice is forced to pay reparations for 5 years to cover for the damage.

1405-1408: Gian Spends the Next couple of years consolidating his empire. He continues secure his various alliances signing mutual defense pacts with Naples, Austria, Hungary, and Aragon. This time of universal peace in northern Italy created made Milan a major cultural centre that could rival that of Venice, and Rome (kind of like cultural importance of Florence). In 1407 he proclaims the Duchy of Milan to be Renamed the Duchy of Lombardy. This sends shock waves across Italy as a anti-Milan attitude takes hold in Veince, Papal States, Genoa, and Tuscany. Wonderful!! I do welcome a TL centered on the future glory of Milano.:):)
I'm looking forward to the future deveopments.

The only nitpick has to do with the map: Gian Galeazzo, the "Count of Valour" is also lord of Perugia, Nocera Spoleto and Assisi, as well as of the greatest portion of Romagna. The Papal States are in a sorry state, if you allow me the pun :D
Which means that the remaining Florentine territory is much more reduced than you show, and the papal states are almost reduced to Latium.

Quick note -- Rupert was never crowned Emperor.

I think you need to do some more research here. In 1403, the Ladislas was King of Naples. His only son was the illegitimate Rinaldo of Durazzo, I am not sure if Rinaldo was even of age in 1403.

To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a King of Austria. In 1403, Albert IV was Duke of Austria, but he had been married for some 10 years or so at this point.

Edit: I just checked, and Visconti had only one living daughter in 1403, and she was married to the Duke of Orleans in 1388.

This might work in a Paradox game, but I have trouble buying it here.

Given the treaty you described above, an anti-Milan attitude should already be quite wide spread.

Okay, now I'm going to be a bit harsh. Many people here (including me) tend to take maps rather seriously. This one looks like you didn't even try. The date is wrong. The 'x'-ing out of legend looks lazy. Florence's name is obscured. Much of Italy is wrong given the date of 1407. Worst of all, it's a gif.

I think this has to do with the use of a base map from 1494 rather than one of the appropriate time period.

What's wrong with a gif? (genuine question)

I don't think the treaty is so one sided as to be impossible, given a Milanese millitary triumph against Venice. Timelines are hard, cut the lad a bit of slack.

DjBaraca, remember as you're doing this timeline, that it's not just Italians who want to get inviolved in Italy. Also remember that the Milanese didn't speak Italian, but Romance Lombard, so try and use Lombard titles and names when you can.

Compare the posted image with the original (a png). Notice in particular the dithering (the polka-dot appearance of the Papal States, for example) and how the image looks out-of-focus.

The consensus in the Map Thread is that png is preferred. gif is acceptable if animation is needed, but care should be taken in the settings when the file is created. jpg is used when a deeper palette is needed.

I always do mine as jpegs for on here, and it's always clear. If you're using photoshop, Djb, it'll give you the option to save as jpeg when you do a "save as".

Yeah that all because I used a 1490's map ( it was the closest one to the time period) I will change that for the next one. I also tried saving it as PNG but it wouldn't let me.

1. Rupert was the King of the Germans at that time (which when i wrote this thought it was synomous with the Holy Roman emperor [which there wasn't one at the time]
2.It more of a promise to marry him when he reaches age.( this relationship with naples will become very import for Milan and Italy)
3. that was just a typo it was meant to by Duke of Austria
4. he would probably use illegitimate daughter, or force a divorce/ murder of his only legitimate daughter husband (due to the extremely poor relations with france) he also could get his son to marry of monarchs daughters too.
5.Due to the total victory of Milan over the coalition forces and with Germans backing him up he could enforce any conditions he wants the enemies.
6. Yes there would be anti-Milanense feeling in the north. But with Gian crowning himself duke of the Lombardy's we pisses off the rest of Italy expect for Naples
7. Sorry it was late a night and i wanted to get the maps done quickly

(sorry about the size this is the only know picture of Maria)

1408-1410: Chaos erupts across Lombardy Maria has been named the Duke of Lombardy in April 21, 1408. Various Nobles and Condottieri attack one an other for the right to be the primary power behind. Facino_Cane.png

1410-1412: Facino was a smart politician he need an outlet for Maria cruelty and needed to secure his position as the force behind Lombardy throne. He saw his opportunity in Genoa. Genoa was supporting a group of Guelphs(people who supported the pope and the old order, instead of the HRE). Maria was not convinced that Genoa was behind this. Regardless though he lead the presuctions of the Guelphs. This radicalized them making them unpredictable. While walking through the street of Milan. Maria was attacked by Guelphs with the attempts to assassinate him. The guards are able to kill or capture the assassins. During the subsent Interrogations (torture) they figured out that they were back by Genoa who hope they could cause civil war in Lombardy and rid themselves of them.

Facino Cane could now strike Genoa. Genoa hoping to stop the Lombard advanced attacked Lombardy. Cane won a quick victory at the Battle of Alessandria. Genoa immiedtaly retreated to the city of Genoa, all the foreign traders lefts any one who could get out got out. On March 16th 1413 the siege of Genoa began. The siege would last for a year and half due to ship still being able to access the port.

1414: a plague breaks in the city. Living in close quarter has lead to the outbreak. The fleet bringing supplies was destroted by storms and Lombard and Catalan attacks. On April 22, 1414 the Lombards broke through the walls a took the city sacking the entire city.

Against the advice of his advisors Maria went to city to check up on his troops. He is murdered by former Genoese troops. The troops massacred the entire populace in revenge. The Pope furious of such an action, conquered the Lombard areas of Romanaga during the confusion.

With his last words Maria made sure the army would support his brother Flippo for the position of Duke.
