Football Challenge: Make the Buffalo Bills Good

It's no secret that the past few years have not been kind to the Buffalo Bills, and that they've more than once snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, if there was even a chance of victory to snatch anything from.

The challenge is to make it so that the Bills do not go down the path of being an embarrassment, and to make/keep them a good team.

I'll admit right now, I know almost nothing about football. What I do know is that one of the Bills' biggest problems is the fact that they're a small-market team and therefore might have trouble paying for the very best players. A solution is here!!

A high-speed rail line is built from Toronto, through Niagara, to Buffalo and from there to NYC. The Bills, sensing an opportunity, partner with the rail company to bundle Bills tickets (especially for week games) and train tickets, making both of them cheaper. This attracts a significant amount of investment from Toronto, which brings more money, better players and even more fans. The virtuous cycle continues. It may not be enough, Lord knows some big market teams are crap, but it could work.

You don't lose the Super Bowl that many times without being good. I mean, you have to GET there.

Had Norwood made that Field Goal I think it's reasonable to assume they'd have won at least one more Super Bowl in the early 90's. That's enough I think for them to be seen as Good.

I admit I know little about Football too. I certainly don't know when the Bills started to suck, but I know that today, they do indeed suck. It's like a Football Dark Ages.

On them winning another Super Bowl in the early 90s, if everything else remains the same, that'd just be them being considered "good" on tenure, and tenure stretched pretty thin given their track record in the last few years.

I don't really blame Norwood for missing the field goal. He was 1 for 5 on 40+ yard field while kicking on grass, and the one he made was 41 yards. A 47-yard field goal can be a tough kick to make any time, but the pressure to win the Super Bowl just made it worse. If anyone is to blame, it's the Bills' offense for not controlling the ball longer, and the Bills' defense for allowing the Giants to control the ball as long as they did. The half-time show spent more time on the field than the Bills' offense in the 2nd half.

Let's also not forget that there were 6 seconds on the clock so there was enough time for Jim Kelly to throw a quick out route pass to move the ball closer so Norwood would have a shorter range.

Market size doesn't matter all that much for the NFL.

The simplest way is just to do better/luckier in the draft. For instance they traded for the Cowboys 1st round pick in 2004, giving up amongst other things their 2005 pick. They used that pick on J.P. Losman. If they hadn't made that trade they could have snagged Aaron Rodgers in 2005.

Not relevant. The Bills have had some of the worst drafts in the history of the NFL over the past decade and a half. A lot of their current 'name' players - insofar as the Bills have any name players, of course - were actually picked up in free agency.

And small-market teams can do just fine in the NFL. Exhibit A, of course, is the New Orleans Saints.

Give them a coach who understands that when your Quarterback gets good, you don't throw away the best wide receiver you have on your roster. IE Lee Evans. Plus they have been good. In the early 60's, for a while in the mid 70's, the late 80's and obviously the first half of the 90's. In reality they only look bad in comparison. The Patriots, on top at the moment, have been good Twice in history. The Nineties, very intermittently and now. And yes, 1985, but that was a lucky streak of pretty epic proportions. The Lions on the other hand, have been bad since the late 50's. The Saints have been terrible since they were created in the late 60's. Many teams have been worse and had worse streaks the Bills. Some teams have never been to a Super Bowl. The Bills have been to 4. The fact that they have never won one is not proof that they are bad, its proof that they can't finish. And that the AFC was worse then the NFC in the early 90's, as proven by the Bills huge victories in the AFC championships.
