The following is the first installment of a new timeline I have been working on. It is based on the outcome of the second 1974 election being different due to a scandal affecting the Wilson government in the run up to polling day. As a result, in Scotland the SNP do better than in otl, gaining 18 seats, rather than the 11 of otl. As a result, they hold the whip hand in Parliament. Across the UK, the Tories are the largest party. Ted Heath returns to Downing Street.

In April 1975 in otl, Gavin McCrone wrote a report on Scottish Independence, link, which argued that repeal of the union would be in Scotlands interests. It was marked top secret by the government and only released 30 years later under freedom of information. In ttl, in May, it is leaked, causing the SNP to put forward a no confidence motion in the government, leading to a third election in 12 months. In Scotland, the SNP win 37/72 seats, and immediately call for a referendum on independence, which is granted by Heath who wins in England.

On a tide of this wave, Scotland votes by 60%-40% to leave the United Kingdom.

Independence day is 1st May 1976. Here is my take on the timeline, or at least the first few months. I warn you, it is rather lengthy.

Hope you enjoy. Would love it if you comment.
