Flight 93 WI

I believe an episode of Mythbusters showed Adam and Jamie able to land a smaller plane (in a flight simulator) using only instructions radioed to them by an air traffic controller. A commercial jet is a good deal more complicated, but it would certainly be possible, providing the passengers had been able to get control of the plane above a certain altitude, which would've given them time to get the instructions they needed from the ground.

It's at least possible enough not to require ASB intervention. I imagine the person who actually landed the plane would be regarded as a Chesley Sullenberger-esque figure, while the passengers who assisted in taking down the hijackers would be doing a LOT of speaking engagements, getting the Medal of Freedom possibly, etc.

They may prove to be the one bright spot of that dark September Day. A good number of them would likely make careers baded off it. Am I the only one who can imagine Todd Beamer running for higher office under the motto 'Let's Roll'? Or Mark Bingham as a gay rights advocate, or LeRoy Homer as a black AMerican hero?

Certainly possible, it's not THAT difficult to make a low speed, flat, belly-first crash landing that sees 90% or more of the passengers walking away from, and an actual landing isn't out of the realm of possibility either.

IF they manage to capture the highjackers alive and they are taken by the authorities, would they have a trial?

I think the passengers retaking the plane would preclude any of the hijackers still living. Those guys were committed to doing what they planned and I don't think anybody aboard would be too concerned about trials and etc when they just about had some madmen try and kill them all.

The passengers are hailed as all-American hero's, massive bookdeals, movies are done, an add to the patriotism that occurred right atter 9/11. It is likely some Conspiracy Theorists will have to use different Ammunition, since this basically proves the attacks were carried out by Middle-Eastern extremists and not ''radio controlled airplanes'' as some call it.

I saw that episode and it was a not a small plane. It was a jetliner....

Auto-landing

Some jetliners have a fully automatic landing system. Pilots tend not to use them--but instructing a passenger on how to doit shouldn't be a problem--assuming that teh figure out how to use the radio--or get on a cell phone and call someone.
