The Rising Lion of Galicia
Leszek II duke of Poland had his sister, Euphemia of Kuyavia married to Prince Yuri of Galicia, son of Lev I of Galicia on April 4, 1287 and in the meantime Przemysl II of Greater Poland betrothed his daughter, Elisabeth Richeza to Otto of Brandenburg in exchange of Albert III of Brandenburg giving up his claims on Pomerelia and Otto of Brandenburg demanded for Elisabeth Richeza to be sent to Brandenburg, thus Elisabeth Richeza was raised in Brandenburg by her future father in law and Jadwiga of Kalisz in May 5, 1287 was married to Henry IV of Wroclaw and with her marriage the claims of Przemysl II of Greater Poland to Wielun was given up to Henry IV of Wroclaw. Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh was made the heir of Leszek II duke of Poland and his wife arranged his marriage to Kunigunde of Bohemia and they were married in June 4, 1287 and Leszek made Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh his own heir and after Leszek died in July 5, 1287, Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh became the High duke of Poland.
Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh aspired to the title of the King of Poland, asking Pope for permission for a coronation. The negotiations were successful, and he send to Rome 11,000 grzywnas as a present to the Pope. But when the envoy reached Italy it was noted that 300 grzywnas were stolen during the trip, and the Pope, infuriated, cancelled all negotiations with Henry IV. Although the embezzler was able to escape from the papal fury and the justice of the Doge of Venice, it is known that Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh wanted to punish him. In order to prevent the imminent revenge of the Duke it was decided to get rid of him: a false lawyer (brother of a one of the Duke's doctors) was employed at the court of Kuyavia, and slowly poisoned Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh. The poison was finally detected, but it was too late to save the Duke. Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh died in the Catholic faith in June 4, 1288, deciding not to prosecute or punish his killers, his wife, Kunigunde was remarried to Boleslaw of Masovia in October 4, 1288, it was argued that Lev I of Galicia had Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh assasinated in order for him to gains some power in Poland.
In 1288, Przemysl II of Greater Poland was killed by the rebelling nobles of Greater Poland and Henry IV of Wroclaw annexed Kalisz, Poznan and the gained the co-rulership of Pomerelia and assumed guardianship of Casimir II of Kuyavia who was a minor and also became a regent of Kuyaviia.
After the death of Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh the suspicion that Lev I of Galicia had Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh assasinated was confirmed and first time attacked Poland after the death of Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh and Polish dukes were unprepared for this and the throne of Krakow remained vacant for a time and because of the death of Wladyslaw the Elbowhigh. Lev I of Galicia invaded again and siezed Krakow, Sacz and Sandomierz and became the defacto High duke of Poland and and even crowned himself as the King of Poland.
In later 1288, Henry IV of Wroclaw, now having the most power in Poland aside from Lev I after the Galician invasion of Krakow of Galicia asked Wenceslaus II of Bohemia and Albert III of Brandenburg for help, they made a treaty that in exchange for the Polish crown and Lesser Poland, Henry IV of Wroclaw needs to give up Poznan and the corulership of Pomerelia completely provided that the marriage between Elisabeth Richeza and Otto pushes through because Elisabeth Richeza the heir of Greater Poland and the heir to the corulership of Pomerelia is affianced to Otto of Brandenburg and it is provided in this treaty that if Elisabeth Richeza marries another man Brandenburg will lose Poznan and Poznan will be the possession of Elisabeth Richeza's husband and also have the lordship of Pomerelia as a Polish fief, losing a part of Poland in exchange of the assistance made Henry IV of Wroclaw think many times and was sad about the treaty.
