On September 21, 454 Aëtius was slain by Emperor Valentinian himself. So what if Aetius is instead able to overpower & kill the Emperor, then is proclaimed the new Western Roman Emperor?
Aetius has been emperor de facto. Just butterfly the asassination away or even better: Valentinian himself. I think Aetius was far too loyal to kill his emperor.

Even when said emperor is trying to stab him to death ? He had no trouble coming at the head of a hunnic army to have himself reinstated as magister militum.
Valentinian feared Aetius might place his son upon the throne, which he might just do in such a situation, with him remaining magister militum and the effective power governing the empire.
