WI the massive communal confrontations in this northern Kosovo city had totally exploded into new interethnic warfare during 2000, despite- or maybe veen because of- the presence of 8,000+ KFOR peacekeepers (who were under French command, with doubts cast on the French contingent due to their perceived pro-Serb leanings) & UNMIK police ? Could these tensions have perhaps been ignited by 1 of the numerous protests at the Mitrovica bridge, or with the humiliating incident at nearby Mitrovica for the 82nd Airborne contingent who were surrounded & pelted with snowballs & rocks by Serb civilians, then had beat a hasty retreat ? WI say in the latter incident the Americans had opened fire in self-defence, killing & injuring scores of Serbs which resulted in a violent Serb response against KFOR ?
