A Lighter Shade of Black- The Second Cold War
A Lighter Shade of Black- The Dread Calm
Ordinarily at this point in any scenario it would all be doom and gloom, proxy wars, geopolitical gambits and nuclear war near misses as far as the eye could see. Sure, I could tell you all about the Siege of Greater Buenos Aires, about the Bush Wars and the Insulindia Campaigns, about the Indian Conflagration, but all that would be par for the course and I'm trying to do something different. So, for this update on the Dread Calm, instead we'll be focusing on the positives, the rising tide of sanity that brought an end to the brutality of the twentieth century and ushered in a brighter world in their wake.
The first domino to fall was within the Tsalal Hegemony. While the Crystal Islands (acting through a series of unwitting intermediaries) had been unable to spark rebellions in the Tsalal colonies severe enough to turn the tide of the Southern Theater of the Second Cold War, the embryonic national consciousnesses of the Lower World Tsalal had been awakened by the conflict and by the continual demands of the motherland as the Dread Calm entered its first generation. Too often it was Hegemony officers throwing colonial bodies at the continual proxy wars that circled the southern hemisphere like a ring of blood and fire.
Veterans of these conflicts with the Pacific Pact, the Atlantropa Treaty System, and the Russian Empire would return home broken by their experiences, a living reminder to the Lower World Tsalal that they were bearing the brunt of the status quo. Inspired by the nonviolent resistance embraced by the Tsalal in America, these veterans and domestic reformers were often harshly suppressed by their colonial masters, finding common cause with the Europeans, Amerindians, Africs and Aborigines that their own ancestors had driven into a vulnerable and volatile precarity. Eventually the calls for reform or revolution became impossible to suppress, and a Shaghut-led coalition ruling the Hegemony after the Stormy Forties eventually conceded that it was better to embrace them as equals to keep the Tsalal world united against the three headed hydra to the north*.

The flags of the newly-independent Plurinational Chiefdoms of Qyutttttut, United Republic of M'Bwun, and Uluru Confederacy. All three have overcome initial stigma to become equal partners within the Tsalal Hegemony.
The Tsalal Civil Rights movement in America stretches back almost to their earliest days in the United States. Initially imported in huge numbers from among those fleeing the effects of the Tambora eruption of 1816, the Tsalal had initially been intended to introduce hybrid vigor into the American enslaved population. Though a high rate of admixture would take place over the following generations, repulsion toward the Tsalal by free Africs and white abolitionists both would endure even through an otherwise successful Reconstruction, with the native-born Tsalal often persecuted and segregated by a white society bolstered by massive influxes of Latin American, Boer, and English refugees and by the parallel Afric high society that was able to point to them as the alien other to prove their own humanity and equality with whites.
The downtrodden Tsalal-American population would be forced to build up its own institutions in the face of this dominant culture, the oldest and strongest of which would be the Children of Christ religious movement, also known as the Tsalal Trinetarians. A syncretic faith for a syncretic people, the CoC was centered on the theology of Reginald Christ, a Ptahri exile from the Dread Empire of Leng who saw a vision of God telling him to renounce his violent ways and travel North during the Second Great Exodus of 1883. Freely blending Evangelical Christianity and God Worshipping Thought with varieties of Tsalal monotheism and Gnosticism, Reginald preached that he was God's third son, and that there was a distinct difference between the Malevolent demiurge clearly described in the Old Testament and the all-loving many-faceted Supreme Being of the New Testament that fathered himself and his brothers.

The Trinitarian flag has become a recognized symbol of Tsalal-American identity, even among those subscribing to other faiths or none at all. Ironically the Trinitarian theology has no connection to Knaaresh, but adopted the Star after Reginald was tied to one and lit on fire by an interracial mob during the pogroms of the First Cold War.
Considered heretical by both Christendom and the Tsalal of the top of the world, the Tsalal Trinetarians would suffer intense persecution, but would adapt and evolve into a robust system of support for the Black populace in America and even make inroads among the Tsalal diaspora more broadly. The Trinetarians would form the nucleus of the Tsalal Civil Rights movements in the United States which would culminate in the passage of the Second Reconstruction Acts of 1985 and eventually in the election of Louise Lovegrove** as the first Tsalal-American president and the one to preside over the thankful end to the Dread Calm.
The first decades of the 21st Century would see the final shattering of the Crystal Pact, with the Machtist regimes imposed on Scotland, Iceland and Ireland toppled by internal revolts and London and Zha-Dumm reduced to glass*** by a coalition of the superpowers. Occupation, full Dissolution**** and reconstruction will be the work of decades to be sure, but the world can finally breath a sigh of relief with the shattering of the crystal dagger looming over them. The destruction of the heart of the Cold Islands would also bring sweeping change in the Hegemony with the rise of the Cosmopolitan Coalition. A fusionist organization between the Anti-Cannibalism Leagues, People for the Ethical Treatment of Northerners, Children and the Infirm, and the surging pro-democracy and environmental movements, the Coalition has seen steady progress implementing its humanist platform even in the face of more conservative elements alarmed at the pace of change and scaremongering about the "destruction of time-tested ways of life.

A growing force among the Lower World Tsalal states since the initial independence movements, the Coalition began to grow in the motherland following rising alarm about ozone depletion, climate change, and invasive species. A stylized map of the southern hemisphere centered on the pole, the symbol of the Cosmopolitans is commonly referred to as the "Green Antarctica" flag and represents a middle ground between Tsalal and Northern flag orientations.
*Ironically a similar movement began among the Co-Prosperity Sphere in the wake of its involvement in India and Insulindia roughly a decade later, one strong enough to eventually push through political devolution. Modern members of the GEAC-PS retain the Japanese Emperor as ceremonial head of state, but have control over domestic policy and proportional representation in the East-Asian Diet, with several even having their own national monarchs beneath the Emperor.
**Mixed-race descendant of Howard Phillips, president from 2017 to 2025. TTL his daughter immigrated before the outbreak of the Second Cold War, as her mixed parentage singled her out in the increasingly hostile Second Hegemony.
***Ha ha. More seriously, it was a very fraught time, since both the Crystal Islands and Albion had nuclear weapons. Thankfully they were too distracted by internal revolts until their silos were crippled by computer viruses and reduced to slag, though the possibility of nuclear proliferation remains a concern to all involved.
