Why doesn't the Saxon Volksrepublic follow the other Volksrepublics' tongued Swallowtail designs?

So basically this is an idea of what the flag of a "directly" imperialist United States could look like. Specifically, ITTL the US annexed Canada, Greenland, the Philippines, Mexico and Cuba through a variety of methods. In one corner there's the usual star field, with an extra 19 stars to represent 19 new states, and in the opposite corner there's a little map of the empire, like how Kosovo and Cyprus have little maps on their flags.

Ooh, I really like this. Is there a backstory behind this TL?

Thanks. There are several threads that I'm trying to tie together into a coherent timeline. Some highlights:

France:
France is the dominate power in Europe. ITTL Charles the Bold had a son, Philip (no relation), and lived longer. Philip inherited Charles's vast lands. His army used the Burgundian flag in gold on blue as its war flag. Under this flag, Philip led the successful defense of Rome against the Ottoman siege. The pope recognized the new Kingdom of Burgundy in appreciation (and retribution for France's failure to send troops). Philip I's great-grandson would inherit France in a War of the Two Henrys and One Charles. Initially the two kingdoms were held in personal union. Eventually they were united into the Kingdom of France and Burgundy. The name was simplified to Kingdom of France as part of a reform incorporating some of the colonial lands. Valois-Burgundy remains the ruling house. Their royal banner is based on the coat of arms of the Duchy of Burgundy:

Ancient_Flag_of_Burgundy.svg

Bohemia-Bavaria:
After greater success by the Ottomans against the Hapsburgs lead to Albert V of Bavaia to be elected King of Bohemia. When the Wittelsbachs inherited Austria, it was combined with Bavaria to create the Kingdom of Bavaria. The two kingdoms were in time united into the UKBUB. The official royal residence is at Passau. The Bohemian lands, especially the urban areas, are largely Germanized.

Iberia:
The War of the Castilian Succession was won by Joanna and Afonso V, but the union of Portugal and Castile-Leon was short-lived. After Afonso died, Joanna was wed to Íñigo Fernández de Velasco. A drawn-out war with John II and later Manuel I, Castile won their independence. However, Leão and Galiza remained under the Portuguese crown. Portugal is formally the Kingdom of Portugual, Galiza, Leão, and the Algaves. Tangier, Cabo Verde (including Dakar), and Barbados are part of the Algaves.

The wars in Castile prolonged the life of the Emirate of Granada.

Ferdinand and Isabella retained Aragon after failing to Castile-Leon. When Velasco began his revolt against Portugal, Ferdinand also asserted a claim to Castile in the name of his son Juan (who lived longer ITTL). The efforts largely failed as Ferdinand was also distracted by the Ottoman invasion of Naples. He was able to occupy and secure Murcia. Juan would go on to conquer Granada

Lombardy:
The Hapsburg ruled Kingdom of Lombardy was united by the Duchy of Milan.

I can answer questions about other areas if you are interested. And see below.

Why doesn't the Saxon Volksrepublic follow the other Volksrepublics' tongued Swallowtail designs?

In universe:
The Saxon Revolution started in Bremen. The revolutionary council in Bremen had already been using this flag, painting the city's flag with traditional colors of the Saxon people. At the time of the Swedish Revolution, Finland, Estonia, and Lithuania were part of the Kingdom of Sweden. After the revolution, the councils split (largely amicably) along national lines in accordance with volksrepublic philosophy. The four continue to coordinate policy, especially in exporting the revolution to Poland.

ITTL Lithuania is roughly OTL Lithuania and Courland. It became a duchy within the Kingdom of Sweden when The Teutonic Order was secularized in an alt-Reformation. The rest of OTL Latvia is the Russian Corridor.

Out of universe:
I'm a big fan of the Bacon-flag and Norwegian swallowtail. ITTL, Norway is still part of Denmark, so some other flag needed to fill in.

You also mention an alt-Reformation. How did that go, and so who are the Catholics, and TTL Protestants?

"The biggest threat to the party is those rebels down in Louisiana. No matter how much effort is put in suppressing them...it never works. Their stand against authoritarianism has inspired several other resistance groups throughout the states. It's only a matter of time before the Eagle falls."

I'm most interesting in the British Commonwealth, and Greece.

Unfortunately, Greece is one of the less-developed ideas. I do know it includes Cyprus and some minor additions in East Thrace, including Adrianople. The city was the site of two major battles/sieges during the Balkans War in the early XXth Century. During the peace negotiations to follow, the Greeks saw the liberation of the city as a major political victory while Rumelia and the Köprülü Empire (there was a palace coup a while back) saw the ruins as not worth the effort. The city has been rebuilt and is now the unofficial residence of the Ecumenical Patriarch. The kingdom today is caught between the territorial ambitions of Rumelia and the Köprülü Empire with France and Russia vying for influence.

The British Commonwealth deserves serve wikiboxes. ITTL, Henry VIII produced an male heir with Anne Boleyn. England remained Catholic, but the Crown began exerting more control over the Church's operation and finances. Ireland was better integrated. In the mid XVIIth Century the War of the Scottish Succession saw England victorious over Denmark. It also saw the rise of an alt-Levellers movement that included an alt-Baptist theology. This lead to the 1st British Rebelion/Revolution (depending on who's writing the book). Althought the Tudor Dynasty survived made some major consessions, the Levellers made little progress, and the monarchy fell firmly under the sway of the rich merchant class and colonial companies. The new Leveller church remained influencial in the lower classes. During this time, Britain expanded her colonial possessions to include nearly all of New World north of the 40th parallel north (except for New Burgundy) and south of the 40th parallel south, Moskito, with significant holdings in the Antilles, southern Africa, and Indonesia. The kingdom also wielded influence in large swaths of India and China.

In the late XIXth Century, tensions again came to a head. The merchant class looked to free itself of the interference of the king. The monarchy, supported at least in part by the Catholic Church, looked to real in the merchant class. The lower classes, refusing to fight or even work for either side. The Second Revolution, first of the Red Banner Wars, began with a general strike in Manchester and quickly spread throughout the country and the colonies. The Commonwealth was established with its capital in Manchester. It continues to this day as a somewhat authoritarian, but not orwellian, alt-communist state. Although the Catholic Church has been expelled, there is no official stance on religion. (But if you are not a Leveller, there might be something wrong with you.)

Territoriality, the British Commonwealth consists of Great Britain, Ireland (all of it) and the most of the minor islands. The Hetland (Shetland) Islands were occupied by Denmark during the WotSS and annexed during the First Revolution. The Channel Islands came under French 'protection' at the same time. The Commonwealth remains on excellent terms with her former colonies and sister Commonwealths of St-John (Puerto Rico and the VI), Moskito (roughly Nicaragua and Costa Rica), and Vancouver (Pacific Northwest).

The Tudor dynasty continues in the Kingdom of Canada under the cadet branch of Tudor-Richmond.

You also mention an alt-Reformation. How did that go, and so who are the Catholics, and TTL Protestants?

It's still in the works.
The first wave came in the mid XVIth Century.
One group of Protestants arose in Tübingen under Philipp Schwartzerdt. They spread primarily in Wurtenburg, Baden, and the Rhenish lands. Their theology resembles the OTL Finnish interpretation of Luther.
The second group was a revitalization of Hussitism under Jan Augusta after he fled to Poland. It spread throughout Poland and Sweden primarily.
The third group was the Hungarian Unitarians.

The second wave was the Leveller alt-Baptists mentioned above.

DRR succeded the German Reich after the WWI after the coup of the sailors and the soldiers in 1919.
The Repubblic is a strong military dictatorship mantled with vague socialist ideals and propaganda. The Ruling body is the Zentraler Militärrat under wich there are the regional councils.
The republic is one-party state with German Central Socialist Party as main party.

Edit: the symbol is a great work of @WhiteDragon25

Flags of the Teklistan Civil War:
Flag of Teklistan.png

The flag of the national government and the ultranationalists. Both believe themselves to be the true rulers of the Republic of Teklistan and thus use the same flag. To avoid confusion, most divisions will attach their insignia to the flag to distinguish themselves from the otherside.
Teklistan Islamic Flag.png

Flag of the Islamic State of Teklistan. A breakaway faction trying to preserve their faith against the forced conversions to Russian Orthodoxy undertaken by the ultranationalists.
Communist Teklistan Flag.png

Flag of the Peoples Republic of Teklistan. The faction who advocates for a communist government to return to Teklistan. However unlike the Teklistan SSR, they advocate for a brand of communism based on Tekl values, instead of Soviet communism.

Considering that everyone behaves generally well in this particular thread, I don't think we really need one.

@longtimelurker I think this looks pretty great! Of course the white film on the red helix lines could be fixed, but I do like the meatball gear in the middle, reminds me of the Airforce's meatball, or Ohio's Meatball

This is my first time making a flag, please don't hold back.

Well, it's a great start I'd say.

The only things that I would change would, beyond making it vectorial instead of raster (and thus being able to easily centre the gear) would be to modify the colour red to make it more visible in the blue background and/or give it a white rim.

I agree - the best flags are relatively simple imo, so this works well. I wouldn't change the red, as that would change the association with the USA red. Also, red on blue never really works very well (it breaks the rule of tincture, which comes from heraldry but is a good general rule for flags too). A white edge would be the best solution, I think. Here's a small version with the cog centred and a white edge to the red:
NWOflag1__centred_edged_smaller_FG.png

I don't know what program you use, but anything like paint.net, GIMP, etc will be able to edge a selection for you and help you centre things.
I reiterate, however, that your flag is good, please don't take this post as negative criticism!

Oh hey, I see you're using the custom Commie symbol design I created for many of my older flags.😁
