Here is Connecticut. The flag is mainly a stylized version of the state's coat of arms, which in turn was inspired by the seal of the Saybrook Colony.

I need some help picking a flag. Which looks better to you fine flag aficionados?

The first one. Looks more period accurate.

It isn't. There is a connection to both Muslims and Maryland, but the flag will serve as an unofficial banner of a militia formed by Muslim settlers in the Colony of Maryland, which belongs to the crown of Albion, as a volunteer force to fight in an intercolonial war between Maryland and the United Colony of New England due to a near century of rivalry between the two and the New English violating a border agreement with the Hohdeno Confederation/the Iroquois, whom Maryland signed a treaty of mutual defense with.

If that still makes no sense to you, the full context really requires reading my TL (as seen in my signature). Beginning in 1675, presently in 1760.

Oh. Well in that context this flag makes sense. Out of context, I got the impression this was a flag for a fictional "Caliphate of Maryland".

As others have touched on, it is good to remember that heraldry takes many forms across cultures with different circumstances of need and different aesthetic paradigms. Even within European heraldry there are differences of form, like the distinction Portuguese heraldry makes between white as a color and silver as a metal, or Spanish heraldry's common use of the color Piedra or stone-grey, or the conception in Eastern European (especially Polish) heraldry of Sable as having the properties of both a color and a metal depending on context. There is much that can enrich design in this diversity.

My apologies. Coats of Arms and Seals have a lot in common in my heraldry study.
So long as you know the difference.
For the uninitiated:
Seals are generally uncoloured designs that are used to form an impression in wax or similar substance, often as a signature.
Coats of Arms are shields and associated artwork designed to display heraldry and related imagery, often as a inherited title.

These are some flags which explore a universe in which Portugal never established a colony in South America, leaving an all-Spanish continent. These flags are of countries which would've appeared in OTL Brazil's territory. Hope you enjoy.

amazonia.png

Republic of Amazonia
A captaincy general within the Viceroyalty of New Spain, it encompasses most of what Spaniards called La Amazonía. Population was concentrated along the coast and the less jungled southeast regions, which were filled with fertile grasslands. In 1812, Simón Bolívar led independence efforts, leading several military campaigns which culminated with the capture of Amazonia's capital, Nueva Valencia, in April 1813 (the Spanish left the territory vastly undefended, as they moved troops to the more important regions of Paraguazú and Venezuela). Originally included in Gran Colombia, it seceded in 1829 and from then on enjoyed certain peace and prosperity, only briefly interrupted by a civil war (1909-1916) and a military dictatorship (1964-1969). Nueva Valencia was renamed Rio Negro in 1978, and throughout the 80's and 90's oversaw an economic boom, caused by the nation's transformation from an agrarian economy into an industrial export-based one. Currently, Amazonia is one of the most prosperous and stable countries in a region otherwise marred by war and dictatorships, with a GDP surpassing Finland, Belgium and South Korea.

paraisia.png

Federal Republic of Paraísia
Coming from the Spanish word for "paradise", the region was discovered in 1497, and was incorporated into the Viceroyalty of La Plata in 1536. This rich and vast territory attracted business and colonization from the start; the port city of Puerto Alegre became the busiest and most industrialized urban center in South America by the late XVIII century. Paraísia gained independence in 1811, establishing a kingdom ruled by a wealthy high-class elite of Spanish origin. They oppressed the lower class composed of mestizos, indigenous people and Africans, who toiled in exchange for little. This led to a popular uprising in 1902, which deposed longtime dictator Aurelio Cantera. The ensuing civil war between conflicting factions destroyed Paraísa, and would not end until a socialist government was established in 1918. Although democratic in paper, Paraísa would sustain a prolongated period of quasi-dictatorship marked by rigged elections, hand-picked presidents, corruption, human rights abuses and questionable relations with other socialist states. Despite a nominal return to democracy in 1998, Paraísa remains one of the most troubled and less stable countries in South America, comparable to El Salvador, Indonesia and Armenia.

paraguazu.png

United States of Paraguazú
The largest and most powerful of the three. What began as a small fishing outpost founded in 1496 flourished to become a major port by the mid-XVI century, and a captaincy General within the Viceroyalty of La Plata in 1532. Paraguazú became the urban, industrial, economic and political epicenter of eastern South America, attracting millions of European settlers and guarding the most dynamic and powerful colonial economy of the Americas. Such was its might that in 1635, Paraguazú and its vicinity became a Viceroyalty of its own, and soon after was visited by Philip IV himself. It was this economic importance what led to Paraguazú's somewhat complicated independence movement. Spain prioritized the defense of the territory and its capital, San José de la Bahía, once the rebellions broke out, and not even an attempt by Simón Bolívar to liberate it in the summer of 1814 could break this endeavor. The population was staunchly anti-independence; in fact, it wasn't until the Viceroy was assassinated in 1825 and a full-out civil war erupted that a federated republic emerged. Postwar years were turbulent as conservative and liberal forces vied for power, leading to two civil conflicts (1828-1832, 1868-1869) and a dictatorship (1869-1893). The situation improved afterwards, leading to a golden age in which Paraguazú grew in wealth and power. It was militarily a formidable force, in one occasion winning a war against Britain in 1921. Paraguazú unquestionably became South America's center of gravity; this allowed it to split interests between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War and later with China. In 2016, Paraguazú became the fifth largest economy in the world, surpassing France, the United Kingdom and India.

Hey, posted the wrong versions by mistake before. Here we go.

The Philippine-American War (1899-1902) was a terrible tragedy and a mistake. It was widely and rightfully condemned at the time--then immediately forgotten in the US, unfortunately. At the time, Mark Twain suggested sarcastically that we take the flag, "paint the white stripes black and replace the stars with skull-and-crossbones".

What he didn't realize was, with a modern flag and slight tweaks, how metal that looks.

Shit. That's metal as fuck.

Flag of the Deutsches-Kolonialreich (German Colonial Empire)
An inevitability of Germany's success in the Great War was the expansion of her colonial empire in a scale unlike anything witnessed before. The spoils of war were for grabs: dozens of millions of square miles of territory, readily available to be conquered from their formal colonial masters in the name of the Kaiser. The new Ministry of Colonial Affairs served as a handy took to exact Germany's plans for a new global order; the so-called "Pax Germmanica" the idealists in Berlin sought to create. This flag was fitting for the new Ministry and its absolute control over Germany's new colonies: the imperial tricolor radiated glory and honor, while the stylized Iron Cross in the center was a symbol of the Kaiser's military invincibility.

More flags to come for Germany in Weltreich. Sorry for the gap, but I was busy.

Gotta wonder if people who salute flags like these realise how evil it all seems

This is the flag of the Pacific States of America in the sci-fi/alt future scenario I'm currently working on. After a civil war cripples the United States and threatens to drag on for years, the various factions come together to form a Transitional Council. This Council will oversee the peaceful partition of the former United States, per the authority of the various states governments and a UN mandate. This ends up creating four new countries: the Federal States in the Northeast and Midwest, the Second American Confederation in the Southeast, the Pacific States in the West and Southwest, and a country that I haven't been able to find a name for yet. The stars represent all eight states of the PSA: Washington, Oregon, Northern California, Southern California, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Hey guys, I'm back from my, err... enforced hiatus... and during that time I gotten the help of @timmy_khagann to create new Flag Maker overlays, which means I was able to make a ton of new/revamped flags for me to share with you all! So, on with the show:

TUoWJSb.png

s5ui7lm.png

k0ontgi.png

First off, here're some flags that feature the first new overlay wonderfully provided by timmy_khagann, the iconic Syndicalist Hammer, Torch, & Cog from Kaiserreich! The top two flags are simply revisions of my Kaiserreich-inspired flags for Centroamerica and the Unified Syndicates of America, while the bottom flag here is completely new and is a 1:1 recreation of the flag of the Socialist Republic of Italy!

Some more flags that feature the Syndicalist logo include:

C0JLLVq.png

The Syndicalist Republic of Bolivia...

B2ENo8G.png

The Mali Syndicated Communes...

oqSaXwR.png

The Nigerian Commune...

Nz370re.png

TXAolBh.png

And most importantly, the Gran Colombian Socialist Republic, once again completely revamped, and now comes in both standard Hammer-&-Sickle and Trotskyist-Fourth-International variations! I'm proud of this one in particular, as it's kinda what I've been wanting to portray the GCSR as all along since my very first rendition, but had to stick to the Hammer-&-Sickle due to limited options. Well, not anymore!

Briefly pivoting away from the Syndicalist logo a bit, here're some other Socialist-themed flags that I've made as well:

ZAcWuDM.png

Here we have a flag for the Thai Worker's Republic, using the same design motifs from my previous Kingdom of Thailand flag. And yes, same backstory too, hence why there is a stylized depiction of Angkor Wat on here.

D8WvOL4.png

Similarly, here we have a flag for the Ashanti Agrarian Communes, a Communist version of my Ashanti Kingdom flag.

Now then, here's a special collection featuring a complete redesign of my Huk Community of the Philippines flag, with three different flavors!

65vkQyG.png

First flavor is bog-standard Communist/Marxist-Leninist...

SAq1svU.png

While the second flavor is Kaiserreich Syndicalist! The third flavor is also inspired by Kaiserreich...

XFs4YZy.png

In that it is a Totalist flavor! Yes, IRL the Sword-and-Hammer is a Strasserist symbol, but Kaiserreich uses it as their representation of 'Totalitarian Socialism', or 'Totalism' for short (basically Stalinism/Red Fascism/NazBol).

Speaking of that, the next two-part flag collection is for the French Commune:

FFnXLDH.png

The first simply being a revamp of my old Marxist-Leninist design (which you can also take as Jacobin in Kaiserreich terms). While the other...

JU4IQVY.png

Is a complete redesign of my Sorelian variant for the French Commune! Even keeps many of the same design elements, such as the fasces and the upside-down Fleur-de-lis; however, I've also taken the liberty of adding in the Sword-&-Hammer to emphasize its Totalist connections! (The Syndicalist logo is here too - as you can tell from the gearwheel - but a bit of creative overlaying was used to hide the Torch-&-Hammer and replace it with the Sword-&-Hammer).

Lastly, here is another revamp of my old Brazilian Socialist Republic flag, which I went back and re-did so to have it better match with my Democratic Brazil flag:

ScNzGA1.png

And this may be a good spot to segway into a new series of flags from the opposite side of the spectrum! ...Next post, that is, since this one has gone on for long enough.

There are a couple of other revamped Communist flags I have in reserve, but I'm holding off on them for now as I'm still awaiting some crucial elements from timmy_khagann to finish up, so I can do a few final revisions before uploading them again.

Until then, enjoy!

A flag of the United Kingdom of England and Wales in my YouTube series scenario, using the flags of St. George and St. David. The English had taken considerable German influence over the years as well, as in this scenario of Castile and Aragon never uniting, Germany gets a wank.

Fun Fact: Upscale and you will not have any pixel corruption. Bonus points for adaptable flag! Make it 1080 pixels across, 10000 across... IT DOESN'T MATTER!!!

So, I've been working on an ASB subcontinent/country which you can check out on the Map Thread: Friðvärld. Based almost entirely on my old imaginary nation's flag, the basic idea is that the extremely diverse subcontinent is united by a scarce few things: one of them is the endemic cherry tree, which is the national tree of the country.

Any thoughts?

And this may be a good spot to segway into a new series of flags from the opposite side of the spectrum! ...Next post, that is, since this one has gone on for long enough.

And now for Part 2 of my mega-presentation!

As I stated above, my stopping at the Communist Brazil flag provided a good place to delve into the opposite end of the spectrum: Fascist Brazil! Or rather, more specifically, Integralist Brazil:

inryquB.png

And to expand on the theme of Integralism, our friendly little Integralist Brazil has gone and visited some other Portuguese-speaking countries to spread Integralism...

m3TcbQB.png

FZ7uZ1B.png

Namely, Integralist Angola and Integralist Mozambique. Seeing as how Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique were all former Portuguese colonies, it just felt natural that Brazil would reach out to its fellow former colonies.

JjQrrhG.png

k32MiXt.png

Now on the topic of Angola and Mozambique, here are some non-Integralist Fascist flags for the both of them, Nationalist Angola and Nationalist Mozambique; the former design I found while browsing r/Vexillology, so decided to make my own copy and use it as Angola's Fascist flag, while the latter is just a slight revision of my Fascist Mozambique flag, which isn't quite noticeable here, but now the fasces are properly aligned along their vertical axis, all thanks to @timmy_khagann who fixed the overlay for me, and more!

4EfCI2H.png

Such as, for example, making a mirrored version of said fasces overlay too! Something I've put to creative use for this new Fascist "National Senegambian Union" flag here.

ZrrMpnM.png

The same goes for this new Fascist "Mali Empire" flag too.

YcGnTMT.png

Using the Sword-&-Hammer in its original context, here is a flag for a Strasserist Nigeria. Yeah, I know it doesn't quite make sense, but I wanted to use it in its Strasserist context somewhere, and I couldn't think of any good choice for a Fascist Nigeria, so here we are.

xtSgoLi.png

Moving back to the fasces a little bit, here is just a revision of one of my Israeli Totalitariat flag variants, now using a mirrored fasces and both fasces re-positioned to account for their updated realigning.

ewSnRZh.png

Of course, the fasces overlays weren't the only ones mirrored, the Sword overlay got revised and mirrored too! So here is yet another revamp for my Islamic State of Afghanistan flag (which is true to form for Afghanistan, since they really do go through a lot of flag redesigns).

Kg8cyoD.png

In case you might have forgotten, though, there were two custom Fasces overlays originally, so that means the other Fasces variant got a makeover as well! So here we have it on display for a flag for Fascist Norway - or Norgesveldet!

ajmoU9R.png

Norway's Scandinavian neighbor across the North Sea wasn't left out though, as Denmark - now the North Sea Empire - has its own Fascist flag too! The overlay here is just a swastika/crooked-cross variant from a Cross overlay pack, which I haven't found a good use for until now. And it fits too, since Denmark was a neighbor to Nazi Germany, so obviously there would be some influence there.

8IRjk9D.png

Just a revision of my Dutch Rijk flag, nothing special to see here.

bcvd05O.png

And here we have a flag for the Empire of Vietnam, the design itself being copied from the Fascist flag for Vietnam in Hearts of Iron 4. Incidentally, the laurel-wreath here? That was also a revision done by timmy_khagann, fixing an annoying flaw found in the original overlay's design (the left-side stem on the bottom was touching the bottom-most leaf, as opposed to its right-side counterpart which wasn't).

1oGmwqg.png

One of timmy_khagann's best contributions for me was his creation and revision of the emblem of Kaiserreich's National-Populist Russian State, led by Boris Savinkov! After recreating the original emblem for me, I found that the emblem commonly seen in the Kaiserreich community had - in my opinion - some design flaws that annoyed me, namely a deficiency in symmetry. After pointing out the flaws to timmy_khagann, and several editing attempts later, he managed to produce this wonderfully-perfected final product! Now, I know that in the original in-game flag, the emblem is not centered around the Crown of Thorns, nor does the handle of the Sword stick out of the circle, but sacrifices had to be made in the name of irrationally-anal OCD. Besides, it looks kinda charming now, doesn't it?

Now the next few flags are all revamps of old flags I designed, and are all based on a single theme: can you guess what it is? The answer...

sAjJepo.png

Is Falangism, of course! Specifically for this one here and the next three flags, Spanish Falangism, featuring the Yoke & Arrows, another new overlay created for me by timmy_khagann! This replaces my absolutely terrible attempt at recreating it myself using just what was available in Flag Maker, but no more!

Along with Falangist Spain, we have its compatriots in Latin America...

BHeKfeZ.png

Such as Falangist Cuba...

zoLPNsP.png

Falangist Bolivia...

kqFJMyM.png

And Nuevo Gran Colombia!

Poi6ctW.png

Now, speaking of Falangism, here is a revamp of my previous design for Spanish Falangism's cousin, Falangist Poland. Yet another overlay created by timmy_khagann, this vastly simplified things from my original design, which had to rely on a lot of line overlays and creative positioning to get the effect desired. Incidentally, this also gave me an opportunity to standardize my Falangist Poland flag from its previous 5:8 ratio to my standard 2:3 ratio, which I somehow overlooked when I was implementing my 2:3 standarization across all my flags.

7nqf6oT.png

Lastly for the Fascist series of flags for now, here is my newly-revamped flag design for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now featuring a NEW Bicephalous Eagle overlay, provided by of course timmy_khagann! I may have managed to get a lot of mileage out of the older Eagle overlay, but this new Bicephalous Eagle overlay is way more accurate to the design of the Austrian/Hapsburg Eagle, which allowed me to revamp all of my Austria-Hungary/Danubian Federation flag designs, most of which you'll see just below!

The next three flags are all for revamps of my designs for the Danubian Federation, a what-if scenario if Austria-Hungary democratized and federalized:

a2J7HFb.png

Version 1 here is just my take on the design for the Danubian Federation flag seen in Kaiserreich. As much as I tried, I found it just too difficult to arrange the stars the same way as the flag in the link, and the new Double-Headed Eagle overlay couldn't fit within the diamond-shape anyways, so I decided to say 'fuck it' and dropped the diamond-shape design entirely and went with my own variation.

TWfV4XI.png

Version 2 here is just a revision of my second attempt at a Danubian Federation flag, the overall design copied from a flag I found while browsing r/Vexillology; the revisions I made here were just replacing the old eagle overlay with the new one here, added in a crown to fill up some empty space, and bumped up the star count from 10 to 12 for symmetry's sake.

LfVxVuE.png

Version 3 here is actually an entirely new design, something I cooked up when I got my hands on the new Eagle overlay and wanted to take another stab at a Danubian Federation flag design. This is probably conceptually the simplest of the designs here, being less mechanically-complex than the previous two in terms of overlay usage.

That just about completes the entire series of flags I've made during my, er, break here, except for two others: the revamped designs of my flags for Communist Austria-Hungary - or rather, by its full name, the Danubian People's Federation of Austria-Hungary (yes, that is deliberately a mouthful). As for why I haven't shared them here yet? Well, while they are pretty much complete already, I'm waiting for a couple new overlays from timmy_khagann to be completed so I can go back again to add them in before re-uploading the flags and presenting them here.

Aside from that, that's all I have to share for tonight! Enjoy, and until next time!
