I meant just the star and octagon but that's just as fine.

Ah, well, why not. I think these looks pretty good:

Think I prefer the gold one, but both are nice.

The first interstellar human state founded upon communist and revolutionary socialist principles, the Interstellar Socialist Republic had a brief but tumultuous history. After several hundred thousand Terran communists organized a self-imposed exile and colonization mission in the Carina Arm and Inner Centaurus regions, they established a socialist republic in 2415 composed of the various, widespread planets they settled. With monetary support from various political organizations, crowdfunding, and the occasional tacit support from Terran and Orionese governments, they built a mostly self-sufficient federation. However, it became mired in internal disputes over the direction it was supposed to take; this split the parliament between Maoist, Trostkyist, Leninist, Orthodox Marxist, and Post-Marxist factions for almost fifteen years, stalling its progress outside of the typical colonial expansion cycle. Even its flag was a point of dispute; original designs included a simple red flag, replaced with a red flag with variously gears, stars, sheaves, hammers, sickles, and other socialist iconography. Finally, the political fragmentation ended in 2429, when Neo-Leninist theorist and "red evangelist to the aliens" Connor Mackenzie became Secretary General of the federation; with his explicitly Leninist internal policies and attempts to reach out to the nearby alien governments that had recently adopted Mackenzieist communism, he forged a path that would lead to the unification of the ISR with the graal and tauran states to form an interstellar, multiracial communist federation, the Federative Republic of People's Solar Soviets. The ISR was renamed the Human People's Republic, as a signatory member of the FRPSS.

With his policies came the final version of the ISR flag, with an explicitly Soviet iconography. The flag of the FRPSS took clear cues from this design, including the "Chinese style" hammer and sickle as a nod to the majority Mandarin and Cantonese human settler population.

Christian ISIS, Jewish ISIS, and four separate Dharmic (Hindu/Buddhist) ISIS/jihadi inspired flags.

Why a black flag? ISIS uses black as a reference to the Black Standard which is said to be Muhammad's flag and has a long history of use in the Islamic world (and since the late 20th century, Islamic extremism). Why would extremists of other religions use black (like Hindu extremists, who use saffron)?

I imagine the Christian one would use a white field and gold cross, calling back to the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

They thought it looks more badass.

The black background in the Jewish flag is somewhat justified, just look at the black and white emblem of Irgun.

I don't think I've posted this. Based on another flag posted way back when Brexit first happened and everyone thought Scotland would break with Britain, though this one is for a TL I'm writing; the Republic of England and Wales.

In 2600, the Terran Federation was transformed into the Terran Empire. Though technically passed into law in late December 2599, the Imperial Constitution would not come into force until 1 January 2600. The incumbent First Lord, William Compton, was elevated to the supreme title of Terran Emperor, and declared the sovereign, head of state, and font of honor for the new Empire. Effectively adopting a Westminster-style monarchy with some decidedly colonial innovations, the early Terran Empire was not very successful in establishing Imperial power over the colonies; a century of feudalism had deflated federal authority, and the Emperor had an uphill battle to win control. The Early Empire was an age of civil war that only ended with the Imperial Reform of the 2900s. The reforms dismantled the federal structure that had endured in the Empire, broke the power of feudal lords, and restructured the Parliament as a proportionally representative body of the whole of the Empire, rather than an assembly of single-member constituencies from every Imperial province.
The Imperial Reform also redesigned the Terran flag; where previously it was virtually identical to the federation-era flag, the new design removed the archaic Earth image, replacing it with the Imperial Eagle, representing a considerable shift towards a more universal empire that benefited all of its citizens, not just Earth, and emphasized the centrality of the Crown and State in the Terran identity.
