Five ways the USSR could have won the Cold War

This is an article in the National Interest:

I think they did one of these on Japan that was linked to in this forum earlier.

The five ways are Stalin kills fewer smart people, no Truman Doctrine, they build up their military and attack NATO in the 1970s, they forgo the military buildup in the 1970s and concentrate on internal reforms, and they copy what the Chinese were doing in the 1980s. I know, at least two of these were contradictory.

The article makes a good case that basically Brezhnev and his cronies blew it.

To reiterate what I wrote yesterday in the most concise way possible: No it didn't, it made a good case that the article writer knows very little about the Soviet Union beyond what they gleamed off Wikipedia.

"We had a thread about this article yesterday, and the consensus says that it's bullshit."

Sorry! Missed the other thread (I did see the Japan one). Maybe this one should be deleted then.

What about winning Afghanistan and building a pipeline, then flipping Pakistan as an export terminal for Soviet energy in the Indian Ocean?
