First Family Member Marries a Noble?

Simple question (not very plausible, but hey, it could happen I guess; this is more out of curiosity than anything): What if a member of a first family (pre-Obama to keep this from Future History) marries a noble/royal? First though that pops to my mine: Say, one of the Bush daughters marries the Prince of Asturias. What happens? Does she give up her citizenship? What if she becomes Queen?:D Plenty of other options too. Maybe Ford's daughter or something? Feel free to go all the way back to any POTUS family.

Ordinary American citizens aren't barred from having titles of nobility unless they personally hold public office. Nothing extraordinary would really happen, so citizenship would be up to the person in question.

You are probably confused by the proposed thirteenth amendment to the constitution which stated that citizens given a title of nobility would be stripped of citizenship. This amendment was never actually added to the constitution and therefore holds no legal power.

Actually they can, should congress deign to permit it.
In this modern day and age, the blowback from barring someone from a lower office just because their grandfather happened to be a peer would be a bit stiff.

Hell, given this day and age, one could probably argue assumed consent if congress doesn't vote against their taking the position, given how the Compact Clause is currently interpreted post Skiriotes v. Florida (basically, as long as it doesn't step on the federal government's toes, or blatantly violate the Contracts clause, it's okay.)

Now, as for assuming a title while in office OTOH, which is also something that'd require congressional approval, you would probably still need a vote for, so it'd be best to assume it the day after one leaves office anyway.

The Prince of Asturias is Royalty. Not the same thing as Nobility.

It would have been disastrous for the image and reputation of the Spanish monarchy to have links to George W. Bush.

Since a child of a President has no legal or political responsibilities, who they marry has no political or legal consequence for the Presidency, albeit it could have an impact, possibly positive or negative on the President's public image.

Lots of American citizens have married into European royal and noble families, obviously the most high profile was Grace Kelly.

The most high profile example of a political-royal marriage I can think of would be Franco's granddaughter marrying the grandson of Alfonso XIII of Spain. As a result Franco's great grandson is recognized by some Legitimists as the rightful King of Spain and France.

In the 20th century it wouldn't be a big deal. Now, if it happens say between 1790-1840, then it's going to be a much bigger deal.

I totally wasn't serious about the Prince marrying into the Bushes, it was just the first two candidates I thought of (not many monarchies these days). ;)

I've heard about that before; that is pretty interesting. Franco royalty...

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd love to hear more about what might have happened in those days.

Prime Ministers,?????

They are not part of a monarchial class. They are politicians.

I deliberately did that to mess with nitpickers and I've been up all night and I'm barely functioning. :p But you get the point. Monarchic figures. Cover all the bases.

I once saw (in the National Enquirer) a wedding photo of John-John Kennedy with Princess Diana, united two of the most watched icons of the late 20th century. Now there would be an interesting union, both were quite beloved in the US, as well as both of them being very good looking.

I remember reading about how during a royal visit to the USA during the Nixon administration it became something of a standing joke amongst the British side that Nixon kept manufacturing excuses to leave Charles alone with his then unmarried daughter, Tricia...

But on the central point, I really can't see it doing much more than providing employment for gossip columnists. There would be few if any constitutional implications on either side.

King Mshwati's daughter is up for marriage.

I don't know what the US law states about Swaziland.

I believe there is a Zulu prince somewhere as well.

Thailand should also have a bit of royalty.

Why limit ourselves?
