Film WI: "Boogie Nights" launches Burt Reynolds comeback

So, apaerntly the 1997 film Boogie Nights was supposed to revitalize Burt Reynolds career -which had been more or less dead- but due to conflicts with the director Paul Anderson and various other reasons Reynolds never had a comeback and is now reduced to being third-billed in Uwe Boll movies.

So, with a POD of 1997 is there anything Burt Reynolds could have done to salvage his career and possibly become a A-list actor again?

Maybe Burt's lack of a second career is intrinsicly wound up in his persona; sure he act, but he doen't seem to offer the same levels of cinematic value that revived John Travolta or revived Michael Caine do to Hollywood.

What good is he for as a star-ish character actor? Is it worth casting him when someone like Duvall is still willing to work in a movie like Jack Reacher?
