It was a brutal century; the reason things like the Lieber Code jump out

By chance I was just thinking about General 'Howling' Jake Smith. I wish someone would write a biography about him.

It was a brutal century; the reason things like the Lieber Code jump out is because they were atypical.

And Smith was not atypical, in many a colonial army.

Best,

I'm working on a timeline that needs an independent Philippines before 1905. I'd very much appreciate suggestions.

It seems that from what I've read here, having the revolutionaires take Manilla before the Americans arrive and then negotiate for independent status rather than territory status is the most plausible way.

Philippine independence was possible and plausible since the 1820s. The success rate of gaining independence and retaining it indefinitely goes down as the years go by from the 1820s until 1905.

What's the premise of your TL? Just asking.

I'm working on making a more dynamic three-sided Cold War. But for that I need world power that won't be bullied by Superpowers USA and SU. Africa, Middle East, South Asia are too underdeveloped to produce such a country. Latin America is under the US thumb. Europe in WW2 I'm trying to keep as similar to OTL as possible, meaning no world power independent of US or SU influence there. The only choice left is East Asia, but not China, therefore Japan.

For Japan to survive to the Cold War, it needs to not participate in WW2. Making it avoid the path of ultramilitarism, and lessening the need for American intervention and dominance in the region is the way to go, in my opinion.

Thus if the Philippines do not belong to the Americans by 1905, they don't compete militarily with anyone in the Pacific region, and if Japan isn't war-crazy, then no war.

A Philippines with Imperial Japan during the Cold War. Sounds good.
