Filipino Statehood

From 1898 until the Wilson administration began the gradual movement toward Philippine independence, the US ruled the Philippines as a colony with no long term plan for independence or statehood. Suppose for what ever reason the US keeps its status quo policy towards Philippines. During this time both pro independence and pro union(statehood)parties emerge. In the end the Philippines choose union with the US.

What effect does this have on US policy in South East Asia(Vietnam, Indonesia)? Implications for US domestic policy as well(the Philippines would have the largest number of members in the house of representatives).

Well we would be more involved in Vietnam, or we might just land exiled Vietnamese rebels into North Vietnam, who fail (sort of like what we did to Cuba). I think the abortion debate back in the day could be changed dramaically.

I assume history would stay similar to OTL until the US embargoes oil from Japan. The Japanese do not want to fight the USA, but they cannot use the Phillipines as a base to attack Indonesia. Is there oil in Siberia? B/c the Japanese could try to head west for oil there. But that sounds a little ASB.

Yeah I really can't see a Bay Pigs style operation as North Vietnam could easily call on the PRC for support, Cuba is so isolated from the USSR on the other hand. But certainly a heavy US involvement in Vietnam possibly even US backed independence in 1945(No way an American president risks so many votes to appease the French). On the domestic front a far more conservative nation. Roe V. Wade may still happen bit it probably stays up to the individual states too decide on abortion laws.

Well its not so ASB. From 1885 Japan was gaining influence in Korea. In 1895 Japan defeated China and annexed Taiwan and Korea. In 1905 Japan gained hegemony over Manchuria after defeating Russia. In WWI Japan seized Germany's pacific territories. Japan was well aware of America's Philippine policy which possibly encouraged their aggressive behavior. If Japan really believes the US will fight to keep the Philippines the army may get its wish to continue its focus on Asia.

That, combined with the feared massive inmigration of "brownies" to the US mainland, was the reason nobody wanted the Philippines as a trully part of the USA, even if the Filipinos suddenly became die hard pro-annexionists (which they weren't).
