Filibuster Mania!

Ok, we all know that one of the things that Strom Thurmond (God rest his soul) still holds the record for the longest speech/filibuster thing...ever... However, the rest of the Republicans had promised not to do so and were rather dissappointed when he did so. What if they were inspired to do the Filibuster anyways and some were inspired to attempt one-upping Thurmond? How long could the Filibuster have gone on and what would have been the consequences?

If memory serves filibusters were far less effective back in the day than today and more a nuisance than a death nail. Politicians were well entrenched with incumbency and the parties were strong enough to back them in their careers that they could just wait it out until the filibusterer got tired and gave up. Nowadays, politicians have to do interviews and run around and all that to get reelected and to get their face and name out there and so forth, and can't afford to listen to someone jabber on for three days.

But an entire party in revolt back in the day could have an impact. Politicians could wait far, far longer back then, but not forever depending on length and strength.

I say let them filibuster their hearts out. Come the next election, we'll see what the people think about it.
